Oh my gosh, this title totally caught my eye and I KNEW what you were talking about. Nobody but people from SoCal, or even just San Diego would know what this means. And nothing compares but the real deal...trust me, we left San Diego in 2001 and have found NOTHING. Once a place opened in Springfield, Missouri of all places that was just like a SD taco shop, the owners were from San Diego....but it eventually closed beacause the locals just didn't care for it. It's a socal thing! But there are 2 Roberto's in Florida, not exactly the same but close adn they use the exact same Roberto's logo but the food is just a little off...oh boy do we miss Carne Asada Burritos and rolled tacos...sigh....(Please excuse me for barging in!)

It's hard to believe that with all the amazing Mexican and Tex-Mex places we have here anyone would miss Calif-Mex. I mean, is that even a cuisine? This place sounds a bit like Taco Bell.

Yeah, if we got overrun with calimex (or mexicali) I'm not sure what I would do. I'm happy with my tex-mex. When we were in Colorado and couldn't find anything resembling tex-mex (well, just a few) we learned to appreciate southwestern mexican food.

I think what you need to do is set your preconceptions about what constitutes good Mexican food aside, take a firm hold on your sense of adventure, nd just start exploring, especially the local, non-chain Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Interior Mexican places. Don't go looking for something exactly like what you had back in California - look for the very best of the best here (which might actually be in a little dump you'd never expect to find it in). You might surprise yourself and find something you like even better, who knows?

I used to work in San Diego about 2 months a year and Adalberto's was my favorite "berto". I really wish somebody would open a San Diego style burrito joint.
Supposedly, there's a place (maybe east riverside) called Super Burrito that has the giant breakfast burritos.

Bottled ranch dressing. Mild jalapenos. Blend.
I don't understand the love for it. It's salad dressing that somebody decided to dip their chips in. But, Chuy's is bad food to start with so I guess I was expecting too much from it.
