We have a new Cobalt on a lift at Lake Travis Marina. We are getting conflicting info on whether or not to winterize. The dealer of course recommends it. Not cheap! Wondering what experienced boaters in Austin are doing. This is only our second winter in Austin and it didn't seem like there were but a few freezing days last year. Thoughts? If we do decide to winterize can any body recommend a mechanic? I figure if we use one at the lake we can avoid the dealer's trip charge ($200). How much should we expect to pay to winterize the money sucker?

Congrats on the Colbalt, great boats!!
I owned plenty in my days here and enjoyed all of the Highland lakes (Austim, Travis, LBJ & Marble Falls).

As for your question and since it is on a lift. I would encourage you to winterize it. Last thing you want is rusted valves on that small block in the break of spring when you want to turn that motor over and hear the valves slap .

I kept my boat in either my garage (16' and 18' footers) and my previous boat 22' Horizon FourWinns in storage. With that being said, I used a plug and hooked it up to the water hose and started them up and left them running for about 5-10 min once a month. Small investment over $200.00 to winterize it.

Do you have a trailer for your boat? if so, maybe take it out for the winter, or better yet. Drop it down in the water and run her for to 5-10 minute. Yea... it'll be cold on the lake. Make sure you wear a beenie, jacket and gloves

You better, a cracked exhaust manifold or engine block will ruin your day. it's going to be a cold freezing winter this year.

We always winterize ours, whether or not it's a cold winter.

Never have winterized our boat in 25 years of living here. Never had a problem with it either- but of course, there's always the first time!
