oldtoiletsmkgdflrpots big mouth
You know? There are times when I don't listen to that still voice within and I go ahead and open my mouth. I believe, once again, this is one of those times. Actually, I was referring to a song...or was it clowns, I forget which. I gotta go...late for an appointment.

This is the main headline on statesman.com... This is tragic?
Covet UT history? Star's 1914 uniform up for bids on eBay
Without context, I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm assuming you're either referring to the shooting in East Austin or to the mayoral election.

Maybe the tragedy is that Brewster McCrackin' (who's name, by the way, I LOVE) dropped out of the race? I think that happened yesterday, too.

In Texas, news travels slower out in the country.
Juneteenth, 1865 happened nearly one month after the war ended.

It seems pretty cut and dry to me. Man fatally shot by police officer
To his parents he was a good boy who was raised in the church and devoted to his family, loved to play basketball and eat sweets.
According to court records, Sanders was serving a form of probation — related to a 2008 arrest for possession of 35 grams of crack cocaine when he was arrested last week in connection with a robbery at a downtown ATM, the Austin American-Statesman reported. The victim accused Sanders of hitting him and taking cash and his wallet, according to the arrest warrant. Officers found Sanders several blocks away based on a description from the victim, picking a credit card out of a wallet before tossing it into a trash can, the affidavit said.
Police Chief Art Acevedo said Quintana had been looking into whether a champagne-color Mercedes-Benz station wagon occupied by Sanders, Smith and a third man was linked to a series of recent incidents involving gunfire at the apartment complex. Residents in the apartment complex had complained about occupants of a champagne-color Mercedes-Benz station wagon firing a gun in the area.
Acevedo said Quintana first arrested the driver of the Mercedes-Benz, who is also African American, without incident. After returning to the car, Quintana noticed that Sanders, who had been asleep in the back seat, had a handgun, Acevedo said. He said Quintana opened fire after Sanders reached for the weapon.

Yeah, it's hard to know what to believe. On one hand, the kid assaulted someone at gunpoint a week before. On the other hand, the video recorder on the police car had been TURNED OFF. On the other hand, the kid made a quick gesture towards a weapon in front of the cop (we've all seen enough movies to know: hands in the air when a cop is pointing a gun at you!). On the other hand, the officer apparently has somewhat of a history of violence (forcing his way into his girlfriend's apartment).
Creepy.

Consider too that it is 5 AM in the morning, still dark out, the officers see a car matching the description provided by residents of a car who's occupants have been firing a weapon from the car. Officers approach the car and arrest the driver, they notice that one of the other occupants of the car has a handgun. That occupant then wakes up and reaches for the gun. How long should the officer wait before doing something to protect himself and the other officer?
That officer has also received numerous commendations. The only black mark on his record apparently was that fight with his girlfriend.

Austin police officials said Quintana has received a number of commendations during his 81/2-year career, including a superior service citation, the Commanders' Recognition award in 2007 and the CMT Campaign Ribbon for his service in the department's riot control unit. He was an employee of the year finalist in 2008 and was named the 100 Club of Central Texas Officer of the Year in 2003.

Hey Cptn,
I heard an interview with the residents of the apartment complex where it happened. She said how no one there trusted the police and how they won't call the police when something happens. I guess that means they don't call it in when their flower pots are stolen! But in my neighborhood, we do trust the police and we call them for everything, including missing yard art and flower pots. So our property crime rates are higher but I bet our quality of life is higher too!
Crime stats reveal and they conceal!

So strange that the taxpayer-funded video cameras were not functional in 2 of the 3 police cars. Too bad.
