Unless it is a service dog, it is illegal to bring a canine into a place that serves food.

Yet in Austin, especially South Austin, it is very common to bring dogs to a coffee shop or eatery with outdoor seating.

If brining a 4 year old child to the restaurant is considered bad social etiquette (unless the child is well-behaved), what would people think of a person who takes his dog with him to the restaurant?

Depends on the restaurant and the dog, I would think.

Jeffreys, not so much. Most of the ones on the list above, wouldn't bother me any. This assumes that the dog is well-behaved, as well, of course.

and well-scented, and well-groomed.

it's hard for a dog not to feel excited when it is bombarded with the intense smell of food and the enviable sight of people feasting around it.

I think it's kind of cruel to make a dog (who's supposed to be a member of the family) watch us eat for 45 minutes.

Well, lots of dogs watch their families eat in the comfort of their own homes. Having had their own dinner earlier.

I suspect it's not the welfare of the dogs that's really at issue here. Especially given the well-groomed and well-scented comment.

Well, make it one of the issues, perhaps.

i recommend feeding dogs whenever we are eating. that fosters a sense of togetherness.

Boulder has Austin beat on the dog friendly places. You can't go to Pearl Street and NOT see a dog on an outside patio around there. I'm glad that Austin has places that accept dogs on the patio. Especially in the summer with all the festivals going on. People bring their dogs after a long day would probably like eating out as opposed to hitting a drive thru and going home. Businesses know this too and want people to stick around and spend their money.

if Austin was to be any friendlier, the bike trails around Town Lake would be paved with ... you know.
