Love roses, not to freak you out more but you really need to be careful of baby rattlers. Much more dangerous than big rattlers. Have more concentrated vermon. Not good for you or pets!

Back in the day my mom was stung in bed on her back after her parents had just built their house.

Tarantulas? I seen one once before as big as my hand and I was scared out of my life. I hate Spiders of every kind in every way. I am man enough to say I am terrified of them. I am so terrified of Spiders that I can't watch 8 legged freaks, Arachnicphobia, Spiders 1,2, and 3, 3rd movie from the Lord of the Rings, or any other spider based movie without covering my eyes most of the time. If there is one thing worse then venemous large spiders it's carnivourous(sp) large spiders.

Default Photos now

At the risk of turning this into a "critters" thread, I thought I would post some of the photos we've aquired over the years.
I did not intend to alarm with my original post, its just the way it is ROUND HERE, but HERE is rural Hill Country (Driftwood) on big acreage lot. Most of our friends out here have seen as much if not more than us. Our friends in the denser subdivisions dont see much if anything but fire ants, so apologies if I was misleading, indeed these critters are rare in your typical subdivision, but not so in the outskirts. Enjoy

1. Centipede on the fr step, about 8" long, and yes THEY BITE.
2. Corn Snake (I think) INSIDE out kitchen, dont know how it got in...
3. Young Rattlesnake, found under the kids playscape! About 24" , now DEAD!
4. Big One, not on our property, but found at Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center.
5. Typical scorpion round these parts, no big deal, just stomp em. One under nearly any rock out here in the summertime.
6. Finally, just some harmless turkeys! Mmmm good eating?

Honestly, we too were freaked out by scorpions and such at first, but its no big deal, and if you are in a landscaped subdivision, you'll likely never see anything like the above!

G

Also keep in mind that most, if not all, venomous snakebites happen when someone is trying to kill or catch the snake, or just gets too close (which the snake intreprets as a threat). If you simply leave the snake alone, it will almost certainly NOT try to bite you.

If you see a rattlesnake on your property and you want it removed because you have small kids or pets or it just freaks you out too much, you can call for professional removal. But remember that snakes eat rats and mice, which you probably don't want running amok in your yard, either.

See http://www.sdnhm.org/research/herpetology/resources4b.html (broken link) for a FAQ about rattlesnakes and snake safety.
