My husband is in outside sales and he is traveling to Austin next week. I need to book him a room for two nights. We are not yet familiar with Austin, and I am not sure what area to choose for him. Is there at least an area I should stay away from?

Im sure I will get asked what area his business is in...and I don't know how to tell that. He will be traveling to many different music stores in the Austin area. So I guess I am looking for something some what central.

Thanks in advance.

Austin as a whole is very safe.

Sounds like he should be downtown, try the Hyatt on Lake Ladybird. Or perhaps Embassy Suites?

Clarion?

If you have the money I would recommend downtown.

Thanks....I will try downtown. I sort of figured that would be best, but ya never know if downtown is safe. Good to hear. I can't wait to visit Austin myself.

Use priceline and select "4 stars" and downtown, you should be able to pick up a great room in a great hotel downtown for about $60-$90... the hotel provided will likely be one of these: The Omni, Driskill, Hilton , Hyatt or Stephen F. Austin. Downtown is safe and has easy access to everything.

Try the Sheraton, downtown. Trust me, it's a great location and a nice hotel, but won't break your budget. (As corny as it is...I got engaged and will have my honeymoon there, so I'm a little biased perhaps...)

If the Sheraton is full, try the Omni.

I got better rates driving down I35 and stopping at "$45/night" lighted signs than I did on any of the online search sites like priceline or hotwire (which all listed $68-75/night as lowest). I dont know why this is. These cheap places were higher quality than I expected - "normal" quality cheap rooms as opposed to run down / smelly / moldy cheap rooms elsewhere. I even got an extended stay room with a kitchen for that price. Within 10 mins drive of anywhere downtown.

" Is there at least an area I should stay away from?"

...I was told to always stay to the WEST of I-35 preferrably by a block or more, and not go east where things get sketchy fast.

However, Omni is the hi-rise glam place to be for sales types. ~4 blocks from capital, walking distance, also ~2 blocks to nightlife section.

There are some really cheap motels by Runberg, St. Johns, and highland mall. They arent really dangerous, but kinda sleazy. Anyway, like I said above I recommend downtown. Downtown Austin is beautiful, safe, and has lots to do within walking distance.
