If you have found apartments in your price range in that area, wells branch, then it may be a good bet for you.
Apartment ratings are mixes with some pretty negative ones
Some people are a little too ..., Recommended, Apr 06, 2006, apartment review of Hunt Club Apartments in Austin, TX
But I've heard people say you can't rely on those. I have seen some for other places that were very positive and had no negative reviews like that, but they were more expensive too.
The Hunt Club apartments look decent enough in Google Maps Satellite view, you can see what the place looks like from the street. but I don't have any direct experience with them. It is in the Wells Branch area which is on the opposite side of town from where I live but other forum posts from people who moved there seem fairly positive about Wells Branch.

Crime rates appear to be lower then where you are coming from, that is true of most of Austin. Austin has some of the lowest violent crime rates in the nation, but is higher then average in property crimes, especially theft.

Diversity? Austin is a pretty liberal place (compared to most of Texas) and easy going, accepting of differences. Here is the racial distribution for that zipcode.
