We are looking at small towns around the city possible towns are Georgetown, Leander, Taylor, Bastrop, Lockhart, Kyle, and San Marcos.
Sounds like you've simply looked at towns on a map without doing any real research. There are vast differences between the towns listed as far as what they offer, school systems, available housing, commute times to Austin, etc.

It's really hard to say which one would be better for you without knowing more about what you truly seek in a community, lifestyle, atmosphere, activities for the kids, schools, etc. And of course price range if you are buying, monthly budget if you are renting.

I love San Marcos, and some of the other towns mentioned are great too, but your commute will be hell. I know you said that you're used to a 20 mile commute, but commutes from those towns will make a 20 mile commute look like a walk in the park.

I agree with the Dripping Springs suggestion. Probably the easiest commute to downtown and should offer what you are looking for. And just so you won't be disappointed, it will still be a 20 mile commute or so.

I think San Marcos and Lockhart would be way too far for you.

A lot of people really like Dripping Springs, I personally don't. I like Bastrop or Leander. You can pm me for more info and comparisons, I currently live in Northern CA and my husband lived in Reno for a few years.

I agree with austin-steve. You're clearly looking for feedback on the towns, but we need information from you before we can give you anything like reasonably good information on which of these towns would be the best fit for you.

Default Leander

I would put a plug in for Leander. I commute by express bus to UT and it is not bad at all. We have a great Park and Ride and the Metro Rail will be going in the very near future (ok lets hear it). Houses are cheap, schools are very good and Cedar Park is even better. I prefer it up north much more. Just my two cents.

I live in Florida now. There are no jobs, homes/apartments are pricey unless you choose to live in a drug infested area. It is hot and the jobs pay nothing. I would never tell anyone to move here. Let's not forget the hurricanes. Once you've experienced one first hand you'll leave and never come back. The worst!
