Always a soft spot for Austin
Hello,
I just got back from an Austin visit after not living there for 2 months and I have to say that I miss it. Its so weird how you really appreciate it when you're gone, kind of like that song by Joni Mitchell and Janet Jackson "you don't know what you've got till it's gone". I got my Mexican food fix so i'm happy. I do like NYC and plan on living here for at least 5 years though.
All of my friends that have left say the same thing, a few have actually come back, others have comtemplated coming back but are too entrenched with their lives elsewhere. For the TONS of people moving there and for yall that already live there, before you complain about Austin, sit back and reflect how much you'll miss it if you were to leave.

Sometimes I wonder the same "if I was to move back to the mid-west". My intentional goal is to do it (leave ATX / maybe in two-years), and if it does not work out, we always can come back. My parents still live here. So at least we got a little cush if that was to happen.
All in all, I enjoy Austin, but mainly the PEOPLE! I am not a fan of heat and it really puts me down quick since I love to do a lot of sport type activities. You have no idea how excited I get once the summer-heat is gone and start to get cooler weather in the winter.
So why did you move? For a better job opportunity / more income?

I hear ya. I don't hit the town lake trail in high summer, but the Austin "winters" are worth the wait.
From October to May, there is always some point during every day that you can run around Town Lake in 50-60 degree weather.

I do not miss those summers, it was more humid in Austin than normal last weekend too. I moved because my wife is originally from NY and she wanted to go back. I'm originally from Chicago so its no huge culture shock. I'm just a laid-back person and it seems that no one is laid back here. I've adjusted well so far but people just need to chill out and relax once in a while. Austin has great people overall even though its becoming more pretenious.

I missed Austin a lot the first year I was gone. It's a really special place. As I have adjusted to Seattle this 2nd year and am really enjoying it, I don't pine for it nearly as much which is good. More the people I miss than anything now. My kids miss the food...they must say at least three times a week...I miss Thundercloud. Or I will ask them where they want to go to dinner and they will smile and say "Chuys" which of course is what I miss most about Austin!

Not too get too off topic, but I am starting to think Thundercloud must put crack in their sandwiches. I mean, I always feel so good after eating there. Maybe it's the finely shredded lettuce or the guacamole they use on many of their items... but there is something about a Thundercloud sub that just tastes different from any other sandwich place. I've never tasted anything else that comes close to their unique style.
