Default What to do w small kids - Port A, Rockport, Corpus

Besides going to the beaches and the Corpus aquarium, is there anything else we should check out that the 2 to 8 year old crowd would enjoy seeing/doing? Thank you!

  • Visit the USS Lexington.
  • Ride Across the Ferry at Port A.
  • Check out the t-shirt and gift shops in Port A (especially get some fudge at that candy shop).
  • Drive back toward N. Padre along the beach where allowed, stop and collect shells.
  • Have a meal at Snoopy's Pier under the causway on the way back to CC.

That would kill one day.

Steve

I know it's legal, and it's allowed and all that, but I REALLY hate it when people drive on the beach. I just had to say it. Good call on the Lexington and Snoopys.

Can't vouch for how cool it is, but something my wife and I plan on doing (we have an 8 year old and a 3 year old) is the Sunset Cruise/Dolphin Watch through Fisherman's Wharf in Port A. I've used them before for fishing trips, so I have some confidence in the company. It's an hour and a half long and it's $15 for adults and $10 for kids. Under 5 is free. Seems like it would be a fun family thing. I should be going back down there next month.

I'll also second the Lexington. My kids LOVED it. We spent about 4 hours there, and my oldest especially was enthralled by the movie. My youngest loved the airplanes.

Have you been to Port A? You have to drive on the beach unless you are staying in a condo right on the beach. As a matter of fact, one of the places we've stayed, Beachgate, the access is from the beach road! Why does it bother you so much?

I've been going to Port A for more than 30 years. I don't like the 'cruisers' on the beach, the trucks that load up people then drive up and down the beach, usually catcalling and yelling. It disturbs my reading and general mellowing out ness. It's also kind of dangerous if you run on the beach, or trying to cross the beach to get back to the dunes. We always stay on a condo right on the beach (usually Port Royal) so we never drive on the beach.

The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History has a pretty nice children's area.

The best place to see dolphins is on the channel where the ferry crosses. It's fun to watch for them when you are crossing over to the island, but there is also a park at the water's edge near the ferry landing which has some great dolphin watching as well. They do have cruises you can take, but if you don't want to fork out the bucks, the park is the next best thing.

to this day (even tho my kids are now in college) when in port a, we never miss going to the landing for the Scat Cat/wharf cat, when they come in with the days catch (usually around 5pm). they unload all the fish, then hang them up and award the "biggest fish" etc. then hand the fish to the person that caught them.
so you call them, find out what time the boats are coming in, (they are very friendly) you go down there and let your little ones look at all the different fish (tuna, shark, redfish), and then walk a few paces and the folk who clean and filet the fish can be seen doing their job at a screened facility right there on the wharf. they are amazing, they can filet a shark in a minute or less.
it is truly educational and also great people watching. it is free and very casual. we would do that, then hit one of those wharf places for dinner, then beddy bye time for the little ones and margarita time for me and my man!
