There are pockets of ghetto in Austin but none on a big scale. East Austin(around 12th and Chicon) 20 years ago came close but there were still decent pockets.
Nowadays, the pockets(closest thing to ghetto) are E. Riverside Dr from 35 to Montopolis(decent pockets within that pocket though), N. Lamar btwn 183 and Braker, Rundberg from Cameron to where it ends around Metric or so, Northeast Austin around 183 and Springdale, William Cannon from Congress east past 35, Dove Springs area in Southeast Austin. There are also smaller "ghetto" pockets but not many. Even the projects are top rated in the nation here in Austin.
Austin doesn't have the ghettos that Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, or even Corpus has. There are some areas to avoid though and the areas that I listed should be avoided if you have no experience there.

Why? A taco truck might run over you? All of those areas are safe as houses compared to a real ghetto.

If you read carefully, I said the closet thing to a ghetto. In the daytime, it is perfectly safe(to me), at night it is shady but you won't be a crime victim for the most part unless you go looking for it. In a real ghetto, the probability of being a crime victim is almost a sure thing. The taco trucks will run you over if you don't move out of the way though. I could kill for a Carnitas taco now, LOL.
