I am looking for real Mexican restaurants or taco stands/trucks. Where do the local Mexicans eat? Thanks in advance!

Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop‎ is one of the more authentic places I know.

I used to go there for breakfast often, until I moved to the other side of town.

I went to Taqueria Arandinas on Wm Cannon once. I was the only gringa in the place. Honestly, I thought the food was a little bland - but maybe they took a look at me and decided to hold back a little.

North Lamar Blvd has a ton of small taco stands. A few even have tripas, yummy. Tacolote on Lamar is tasty as well as Taco More on Parkfield. Just drive up North Lamar and you'll see them.

The description of some Mexican food at an Austin taqueria as a little bland is actually true for Austin in general and probably had nothing to do with the poster having been the only guera (gringa) in the place. I can vouch for this culinary style going back to the early '70s in authentic little Mexican places in Austin. In any case, I would recommend Chango's on South Lamar and Manchaca, even though it is part of a local multiple-business (I wouldn't really call them a chain - the mother restuarant is Manuel's downtown). The food there will also be mas picante que los otras -- spicier than the other restaurants, lest I transgress any City-Data language commandments.

Try East Riverside and North Lamar. Pick a taco cart and go for it. The best places have a rich, spicy green salsa. The El Pastor taco cart on E. Riverside and the El Pollo Rico/El Regio chicken places come to mind.

johncronejr is on a distinguished road
My maternal family is all mexican. I have eaten as authentic of mexican food as its gets since I was a wee boy....and I can say that I dont remember anything ever being spicy except the peppers that were served on the side. The chicken, the beans, rice, pork, etc....were all just good, not spicy and probably what most who eat tex-mex would call bland.

I just went to a cooking class with a chef from Oaxaca and she stated that the vast majority of authentic Mexican food is not spicy.
