Made it to Top Notch today for lunch...1:45 and there was only one empty parking spot! My three-piece chicken dinner was pretty tasty...much like lightly floured fried chicken I grew up on. Slaw is my style but a little chunky...somewhat sweet, fries needed the ketchup. DW and the teen nephews spoke highly of the burgers, same about the fries. Very nice folks behind the counter...I'll go again if I'm in the area.

We're lucky to still have Top Notch. I'm glad they carried on after the death in that family.

I love Top Notch because it never changes. The food is good and the decor is frozen in time, but kept in good shape. Kind of nice when a business knows that if it isn't broken, you don't need to fix it. Same with the Pit on Burnet Road. It's a comfort.

After reading about the Top Notch fried chicken here I decided I had to try it. I don't make it to North Austin very often these days, but I had business up there yesterday, so I stopped by Top Notch and picked up 12 pieces to take home for dinner. The chicken was good, we enjoyed it, but we agreed that we like KFC better.

Not too far from Top Notch is Lucky J's Chicken and Waffles (cooked in a trailer across Burnet from Amy's Ice Cream) -- worth a try. Not sure I'd say it's the best in Austin (been here 4 months) but the folks who enjoyed it with me, well, enjoyed it (very very much).

Plus, what's not to love about Chicken AND waffles!

LuckyJs dot com

Enjoy!

Popeye's is hard to beat though the Westlake location is a little shady. It's a negotiation every time I go in there!
