Vacation in Texas...
Texans...
Please help us out:
We are family of five, from Norway.
I just finished my studies and would like to bring my family on a vacation before I start to work.
Kids age 6, 4 and 1 years old.
We are looking to spend the summer in Texas. We would love to rent a house on a ranch, or in a small town. Not city life. :-)
It must be a safe place in regards to crime. Besides nature we love 4-wheelers, horseback riding, swimming and hiking.
Any suggestions for us?
Best Regards
Ivar Skiaker

I love texas, but for those types of things I typically think more colorado, wyoming, idaho or montana. With colorado being the best. The weather will be a lot more comfortable and the hiking will be a lot better.

I see you have posted on the city forums, but you might want to post this on the general Texas forum. I tend to agree with the previous poster, Texas is very hot during the summer.. and it would be a shame for you to rent a ranch or something and have to spend most of your time indoors because of the heat. If Texas is absolutely what you want, though, and summer is the only time you can come... West Texas will probably be best in terms of weather and non-city life. Maybe somewhere near the Guadalupe Mountains. Big Bend country would be nice also, but I'd be wary about renting a ranch or something too close to the border. I will say there are very few vacation rentals in those parts of Texas... not a big touristy area (other than Big Bend), because of the reasons described above. It's hard country, and you'll need a car and be prepared to drive 100 miles to almost anything.
Ruidoso, NM might be another good option. Close enough to Texas that you could make some trips to Big Bend and the Guadalupe Mountains, but with a bit more scenery, less spread out and cooler weather.

I would not vacation in TX over the summer. You will end up spending most of your time in-doors because of the heat. If you want to visit here, wait until October.

Aw, c'mon. Schlitterbahn is only open in the summer! New Braunfels is a small town, you can go to Schlitterbahn or go tubing, and you can take day trips to San Antonio, Austin, and the hill country.

I concur. If you really have to come down to Texas during summer, go to the hill country for a while, and stop by Schlitterbahn, the Comal, or the Guadalupe. Jenni is right, October would be better, you can hit some of the hill country festivals like WurstFest, tour the small towns of Frederickburg, New Braunfels, etc. and take advantage of the cool evenings. There are quite a few decent vineyards in the hill country as well.

If I might ask.. why Texas? You mentioned "a vacation before you start work" - would that work be in the States?
just curious.

Yeah, I forgot about the water thing... West Texas would be no good for that. New Braunfels or San Marcos area would probably match the OP's requirement better... if they decide they want to try brave the Texas summer heat.
