By regionally, do you mean which region in the State? Central Texas, of course!

Texas - with a state this big - we get our own region.

I should clarify, which region of the United States. I believe most people from Austin would say simply Texas but I am curious which region people most closely identify Austin with.

Ah. Okay, none of the above, actually - it's simply Texas (since we can divide ourselves into five states, we're definitely large enough to be a region to ourselves). But given those choices, I'd say Southwest.

Austin is on the border between the South and Southwest IMHO. San Antonio is much more culturally Southwestern and Waco and Dallas and even Georgetown to the north are much more culturally Southern than Austin. Areas west and northwest of Austin are very Western culturally, southwest of Austin tend to be Southwestern culturally, and east of Austin tends to be very Southern. However, Austin doesn't really fit in to either of the regions perfectly well--it's way to eclectic of a town to be classified like that.

If I had to pick ONE of them I'd say it's a bit more Southwestern but not by much.

Having lived in Austin for a total of 22 yrs, ending in Aug 2004, I consider Austin to be in the Southwest -- just. It's sort of where the SW begins, actually, both geographically (the Hill Country) and culturally (thanks to the growing Hispanic population and influence, which was much less prominent when I first came to Austin to attend uni in 1973).

It's hard to say - on the border of South and Southwest seems most accurate. I grew up in Louisiana, which is definitely the Deep South - and Austin is certainly very different culturally.

Austin is in the Heart of Texas. Texas is a very diverse place which doesn't really belong in any of those other categories.
