Default What are the "Hippiest" areas of Austin(closest to Austin in the 70's)

You guys all know I have a fixation with Austin in the hippy days....where would you guys say Austin still remains tied to that era, OR would you say we have entired unmoored ourselves of those cosmic cowboy days? Has the Reagan Revolution and the dot-com tech boom nuked that mentality/way-of-life entirely....or are there still little bastions of such life left?

My humble opinion is that Guadalupe in UT territory is the last remnant of such days to survive intact without being touched........still retains a glimmer of those starchild days......organic groceries/co-ops, little unique stores, bookshops, headshops, vegetarian eateries, coffeehouses, blah blah blah....

Any others?

You don't really think that we're going to share that information on a public board, do you, if we want to save what's left from that time?

The point being, if we told you, we'd have to shoot you.

bumpy_1954 is on a distinguished road
We used to swim nude at lake travis in the '70s in Paleface Parck (now Pace Bend). There is still Hippie Hollow, but it got such a reputation for naked women that perverts watch with binocs in the bushes and I hear no one goes there anymore - at least to swim nude.

Tops are optional at Barton Springs pool in town (huge spring-fed and cold!), but the only one I ever saw take off her top was an elderly woman. I was tempted to ask her to put it back on!

Outdoor concerts are the norm and can be nostalgic - especially when you get a whiff of weed from the crowd.

There are alot of old hippies here in Spicewood (where Briarcliff is). The local store sells souvenier T-shirts that say 'Spacewood'

My brush recently was a Marcia Ball concert at Antones....They called it an "EARLY SHOW", evidentally a code for all the older remaining Austin hippies to gather.....they had a bunch of folding chairs, and I did get the feeling that whatever vibe was left from the Armadillo World HQTS floated around for a bit, though I didn't smell any weed floating around.....sad that they/we got so old, but life goes on......average age was prob around 58........I see old hippies at a backyard monthly picnic near Zilker Park too.......funny to see them walking around grey-haired with tie-die, but more power to those old cosmic cowboys......

As THL sez, if there are any enclaved, they are well hidden from developers paws/maws.........lets hope they stay that way, and if the developers find out, we can shoot THEM too!

PS.......Anyone looking for outdoor "OLD AUSTIN HIPPIE SIGHTINGS" would do well to attend the Waterloo Park "Blues on the Green" on the following dates:

July 1...Jimmie Vaughn
July 15...the aforementioned "Marcia Ball".........

Those are the two acts at Antones that always draw the grey haired/tie-die crowd.......cultural anthropologists please take note! LOL!

Wondering where Waterloo Park is?

PPS....looks like a killer night at Antones on July 10....Saw Robert Cray play at a huge venue with Eric Clapton a few years ago....should be incredible close up.....

Agree with everything on this list, but if you want to see where the soul of hippy Austin is re-inventing itself - go east - young old man. 5th to 7th street corridor- Rio Rita, The Good Knight, Shangri-La (how's that for an old hippy name) - a little more post-punk hipster than strictly hippy but lots of great music, tuning in, dropping out and deep hanging out. Also the yuppier east 11th street district . . .

LOL! Indeed, they do seem like lost souls...honestly, is there anything sadder looking than an old couple in tie-dyes?......

On the other hand, a bandana and ripped up denim looks far more age-appropriate..ala Willie Nelson......

Joke....what has 100 legs, 100 arms, 35 teeth, and smells?

A...The front row at a Willie Nelson concert.

I was eating at the Magnolia Cafe in Haight a few weeks ago and walking around that area, and it really blew me away how such a major city as San Fran has allowed that area to remain somewhat legit. Of course it was my first time there so I don't know how much it has changed, but it certainly felt real.

haight was actually a really seedy ghetto, ala the Tenderloin DT., before the hippies and artists gentrified it in the early 60's, shortly after north beach fell out of favor with the beatniks.....indeed, those old victorians are worth a fortune now.....hard to believe they rented out entire houses in the Haight for pennies back then........

Peace, love, and dope!

Wasn't it you who posted the link to the article about Marfa being the new "Austin how it was in the 60's-70's"?
