I got a lil over a quarter acre lot in HSB south. I am looking to get my lot marked off and then have the land cleared, save some of the nicer trees. Does anyone know how I get started in this process? Do I need a survey for the property lines to be marked?

Not sure where HSB south is, but you could get in big trouble if you clear land in the 5 mile ETJ of Austin without getting a permit. I strongly suggest you discuss what you want to do with the Austin Permit office first. I doesn't cost anything to go in and talk to them about the requirements.

If you don't have a survey, you probably should have one to make sure you're not clearing your neighbor's property without permission - that could get you into a legal wrangle.

Where is HSB South? (I should probably know this, but it's not popping up in my brain for some reason.)

Also, what CptnRn said. Make sure you're properly permitted. What's your ultimate goal for the lot?

well my ultimate goal for the lot is to build on it . I don't see that in the next year or two though. I passed by the approximate area this past weekend and it was hard to decifer which is my lot and which is not. I was thinking of getting the area surveyed and selectively cleared. That way I am able to see and envision my building plans without so much weeds and wild cactus/dead trees clouding my view.

I asked the same question a year or so ago (but in city of austin). Do you really need a permit to "mow" brush? It seems weird to me that this would be the case. If you are cutting down trees that is one thing.

As soon as you use the words "clear land" you have stepped into the realm of permits. But if you are "mowing brush" it could be another story.

I could never get a straight answer.

You are well outside of Austin's ETJ, but Horseshoe Bay has its own requirements so you'd best check with them. They are probably far more lenient then Austin.

When you purchased the lot, did you not get a survey?
