Hey all. I'm looking to purchase a house in South Austin, and it's very close to the train tracks that run through S 1st/St Elmo intersection.

Has anyone or does anyone live around there? How often does the train run? Does it blare it's horn anywhere close to that intersection? It doesn't look like the train has to cross roads around the area, so I'm hoping not.

Any input/observations/experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

here is what I did before I moved into the area, I put up an ipcamera and with the help of an internet service that allowed me to view live ( audio and video --- hint hint the train noise can also be heard ) from a browser anywhere I was. You could try the same, maybe some one in the area will allow you, if you are interested the service i used was www.tenm3.com came in handy. Good luck

I used to live over just off of West 290 almost to the Y in Oak Hill and we could often hear that train traveling through South Austin. We are further South now and I don't recall hearing it here, but our current house is all brick and insulated glass windows which cuts down on the outside noise.

There are at-grade crossings north of Ben White at Bannister and south of Ben White at Stassney where I would think it would blare its horn. St. Elmo might be just far enough away so that the Bannister crossing isn't heard that much but I have not experience this first hand either. Also you don't have to worry about the spur eastward coming from just south of St. Elmo as it is presently defunct.

I have heard that there are 34 trains a day on this track.

It runs about every hour -every day. I sleep through it every night. It's actually cool to listen to late at night. South 1st and Saint Elmo sounds like my old Battle Bend neighborhood - you'll be fine.
