I grew up in Round Rock, and lived there most of my life (but I worked and went to college in Austin). You can easily get to Austin from Round Rock in about 15 minutes. It's not a bad drive at all. Especially if you learn the back ways.

Round Rock may appear to be 20 miles from Austin, but, actually, there are areas where you can only tell whether you're in Round Rock or Austin (or Cedar Park, for that matter) with a map, and sometimes not even then. Some neighborhoods that are officially in Round Rock attend Austin schools, and vice versa. It's not really as far as it sounds, especially with the various routes into the various parts of Austin from Round Rock. If you lived in the 78731 area, he'd also be commuting against traffic if he has "normal" work hours.

I would eliminate areas south of the river (Town/Lady Bird Lake) if I worked in Round Rock. I would confine my search to Central Austin and parts north, unless you want to spend an hour plus a day in traffic.
