Help, looking to move to Austin area.
My family and I are looking to move to the Austin area. We want to live close enough that a day trip to the city is feasable, but far enough to be secure in the safety of our children. We currently live in a small town, where it is perfectly safe for kids to walk downtown, go to the pool, etc. without their parents having to hover over them (plus, everyone knows pretty much everyone so the kids can't cause too much trouble without getting caught). Also, the kids are able to participate in pretty much any activity (below HS/JrH level) without having to try out. The level of education is great as well because, the classes are smaller allowing for a better student to teacher ratio. We are looking for a town/city that has a kid friendly atmosphere, while providing entertainment for the parents as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Try Georgetown or Liberty Hill.

Dripping Springs, Kyle, and Wimberley. DS has great schools. These are small town enough. You may need to define "small town" because Creedmoor in SE travis county has only 207 people - and I just checked the stats, and holycrap! did anyone know that Creedmoor actually lost people from 2000 to 2007? This has to be the only town in Central Texas that lost people... point being, if you want a small town that will stay that way: Creedmoor. No communities, though, as it appears to be 99% ranches in SE Travis. I would recommend burbs NE of town, but they are exploding in population at the moment. I don't mean to be redundant, but here is a link I've posted before that should be helpful: http://schoolperformancemaps.com/tx/

The town we currently live in has a population of about 4-5,000. We wouldn't mind moving to somewhere a bit larger, but definitely not smaller.

Yeah, I think Burnet fits your description the best.
