gimme a break!!!!!

Austin:
Explosions in the Sky
Iron & Wine
Ghostland Observatory
Octopus Project
I Love you but I've Chosen Darkness
Okkervil River

You're right. That is no comparison.

How many times do you have to see Bobby S. until it all sounds like the same song? Not many. G.O. is good if you're into wearing a cape.

And you left out Dallas area bands: Midlake, The O's, The King Bucks, RTB2, Chris Holt, Salim Nourallah, Toadies, Eleven Hundred Springs, Centro-Matic, and Odis.

I stand by, and can further support, my statement that the present-day Austin music scene is a pale imitation of its former (90's) self. It's a bunch of damn imitators, with a few bright spots, but certainly not enough to underwrite the city's nickname.

I think we forget that size is an issue too..sure, Houston AND Dallas have better music scenes in total, but they are far larger metros, AND both cities have large arenas....even San Antonio has the Spur's arena for major concerts...and Austin deperately needs at least a few large arenas per its current size after many years of growth.....

Austin is just a mid-sized city, after all is said and done, and cannot support the large music scenes you see in LA, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, SFBay area, etc.........per capita, they have a nice scene, but, as you folks mention, it is far smaller than most outsiders realize.......

Again, it is largely a matter of size, and Austin simply isn't that big...

Austin likes to think it's the live music capital of the world, when in reality Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio ALL have more music venues than Austin. However, those cities actually have other things they can focus on. Austin is pretty much where the "young musicians come when they can't make it anywhere else". Let's make a list of all of the famous successful bands out there who got their start in Austin---uummm, anyone, anyone?? Thats what I thought.

You wouldn't call Spoon successful?

How would we gauge this? Charts? Movie Soundtracks? Are we going historical? (Joplin vs. Eagles)?

Can anyone name a good band that has come out of Houston besides the Butthole Surfers and 2 members of Van Halen?

I am not trying to knock Dallas music, I know a few ppl from Poly Spree, I've been to Nourallah's house on Vickery, they are all good musicians, but Austin bands get more national attention.

if Dallas metro is 4x the size of Austin,
then shouldn't the Dallas music scene be 4x as good?

It isn't. You can make the argument that it's an even comparison. Maybe.

Fair enough. I stand corrected. I didn't mention country bands like Sugarland and Leanne Rimes either, but the criteria was rock. Maybe we can lump in Pantera there, too. fair enough.
