Per repairs to a "bypass culvert"....let's hope its during the down time of the fall and winter..but still will suck, as if they do it in the fall, we will miss those great 70-80ish days hanging around there, not getting roasted like in the summer heat.......

City may close Barton Springs for months to make repairs - Austin Business Journal:

BTW, the article mentioned that the city of Austin is experiencing severe budget shortfalls...anyone know anything more about that? What the hell is THAT all about?

Channel 8 did a story this afternoon on it...

and a Salamander could hold up the repair start date indefinitely......

Three cheers for the salamander!

Looks like he's smiling, doesn't it?

In partial answer to the question about Austin city budget shortfalls, I recall seeing a news item about revenue being millions of dollars down for the city - there was mention of many residential and commercial property taxes (this also affects school district operational budgets, many have teacher salary and hire freezes). In this recession there has been many small business failures (e.g. just look at the number of restaurants no longer in existence). DOes anyone know what are the other contributing factors?

Sales tax revenues are way down in Austin and Roundrock as well, another contributing factor.

Way down, Captain?....hmmm, on the other hand they say that Hospitality was the only sector in Austin to create jobs....must be retail, rather than bars and restaurants........

in other words, in tough times, people still need to pig out/drink/get stoned/hang..........the stoned part of it is underground and obviously not in the local stats....but it is there as well.....

CptnRn - yes, I thought it was sales tax too, but then I wasn't sure whether it was a State or City Tax. I guess the money gets back to the City where it is collected then? We are all in trouble then...less people have spare money to spend on new purchases and savvy people are working on eliminating their debt than adding to it.

That's why its more important than ever to spend local...stay away from the bigBox and franchise, and keep our local merchants in business, before they go OUT of business...

Well, if the out of town roofers are collecting and paying sales tax, those numbers should go up for June and July, probably August as well. I would imagine well over 200 roofs were replaced in Avery Ranch alone...average cost $15K +++. Not to mention the dent repair and window replacement all over north Austin. THAT should cover a closed restaurant or two!

Of course, the local construction and repair folks are already collecting and reporting sales tax(we hope).
