Move to Del Valle?
Hi, my family and I will be relocating to Austin in about 45 days. My husband and I found an awesome 2650 sf home in Del Valle. Does anyone have any recent feedback on the area and mainly the schools?

other than the size of the home, what else peaks your interest in it?
have you seen the house?

Del Valle has a small residential area next to the Austin Airport. So lots of airplane noise. The airport used to be a military base, air force, and the area around it is pretty rough without much to recommend it. Other then a few convenience store/gas stations in the area, to find a grocery store you will probably have to drive over to East Riverside Drive, where mostly college students live. And which is one of the highest crime areas in Austin, zipcode 78741. Del Valle is zip code 78617, I can't find any crime data on it. City-Data has demographics data on that zipcode here http://www.city-data.com/zips/78617.html
Other then the airport, the biggest employer is the Travis County Jail and remote automobile parking for the airport. The Travis County Jail is just East of the Airport. This area has 1906 people in local jails and other confinement facilities (including police lockups), 89 people in other types of correctional institutions
You can look up school performance information here Texas School Performance Maps

It really depends on where the house is located because Del Valle is rather large and the school district is even larger.
Del Valle ISD is not just the area around the airport but runs as far north as 969 to south 183 and 21. East to Garfield, Elroy, Cedar Creek and as far west as Riverside/Montopolis, down to E. William Cannon. They have some good elementary schools and two MS but can't remember the names of those. The High School is relatively new but don't know its state ratings.
Someone mentioned having to drive to eat and shop for groceries. That's accurate but relative to where the house is located. It could be in the city of Austin or out in the country.

Since Del Valle doesn't appear to be a legally incorporated township, how does anyone know how large or small it is? I have not been able to find a map of Del Valle. I always believed it was just that area right next to the airport.
Some of the DVISD schools are in the Austin City Limits so we can't go by their map. Even if we could, it doesn't include boundaries, and it does include other places like Creedmore, Elroy and Hornsby Bend. http://delvalle.tx.schoolwebpages.co..._2009-2010.pdf

Agreed -- as far as I ever knew Del Valle was the dodgey area along Hwy 71 around Bergstrom AFB/Austin-Bergstrom Airport. It's ugly, lacking much in the way of amenities, and has the lovely Travis County Correctional Center as its, ehrm, centerpiece. When I used to do assessments for the Travis County Juvenile Court, quite a large number of the kids I saw in detention came from Del Valle. It's not a nice place! I just can't imagine anyone wanting to live there. Although I'm no fan of Cedar Park, I'd recommend it any day over Del Valle.
