First one that came to mind was Chuy's. But it is a matter of personal taste. I know many who really like Chuy's

Gueros and Threadgills. Hoover's wipes the floor with Threadgills and there are better Mexican meals at taco trucks than Gueros (to say nothing of stars like Polvos).

Salt Lick. There's so much better BBQ out there around the same distance from Austin.
Just cause I'm new to the area... and for full disclosure. I LOVED the Salt Lick. I came home on leave from Afghanistan and I used my leave time to move to Austin. I went to the Salt Lick 5 times in 8 days. I went there once in 2005 and have been dreaming of returning ever since It's the best I have ever had. But Im not going to say that its the best of all until I have had them all...

So what are these other places. I hope your right cause if Salt Lick can be beat then WOW!!!! I'm in for the time of my life!

I agree with Salt Lick...there is so much better BBQ to be had right in town...such as Uncle Billy's. Their moist brisket is so good!

I recommend trying some other bbq joints and then formulate your own opinion. I personally think that Salt Lick's brisket is only good when you cover it in sauce. Otherwise, it's chewy and kinda dry.

Any of the places in Lockhart (Black's, Smitty's, and Kreuz) and Luling (City Market) have pretty good brisket. For sausage, most bbq places in Austin use Elgin sausage, so go straight to the source in Elgin: Southside and Meyer's. I'm also a huge fan of the Lockhart-style sausage, which I think Kruez does best.

If you don't want to drive that far, Ruby's by UT serves up some pretty good chow too.

The ribs at Artz's. So much anticipation. So dissappointed.

I agree with the previous poster, Salt Lick isn't too bad with the sauce. I really, really like thier bbq sauce.

'Over-rated' is the key, I guess. Chuy's is always hyped, so I think it is overrated, but OTOH, the service we have gotten has always been excellent (SW location) and we eat before the crowds anyway. I (or my daughter, actually) really like the outdoor area they have...she loves checking out all the 'decorations' (aka Junk) and peering into the landscaping bushes. So although it is over-rated, we actually like it and find the food to be just fine if not exciting.

Guerro's had to be the most overrated to me, although I have only actually been there twice. Both times the food was about the same as Chuy's in quality, the service was worse, and the crowd was a litte....pretentious? Not quite the word I am looking for, but can't put my finger on it right now.

Salt Lick I find to always be a fun experience. I have never found the BBQ to be bad, in fact it is usually quite good, but BBQ is about as personal a choice as what kind of girl you like . I like the BYOB, I like the outdoor setting while you wait and the live music.

I really do dislike Threadgills, but I haven't really heard it hyped for years. In fact, if someone told me it had gone out of business, I wouldn't have know better.
