Most over-rated restaurants in Austin?
Just curious what you think. I have lived in the Austin area since 1985.
I think Threadgills is THE most overrated restaurant in Austin. For some reason because Janis Joplin ate there we are supposed to excuse the bland uninteresting food. The service is indifferent and I find no real good reason to go there. Yet friends visit us and want to go there.

Oasis, but only because of the food and the bar drinks. The view is pretty much in line with the hype.
Right now, I'd have to say Hut's is the most overrated. The burgers are pretty good, but not the best in town anymore. Not even close. The fries and rings are pretty horrible, IMO.

Chuy's. Not worth the hour+ wait for mediocre Tex-Mex.
Salt Lick. There's so much better BBQ out there around the same distance from Austin.

I agree, Chuy's is the first thing that came to my mind. I keep trying different dishes, to give it another chance, when friends want to go there and I'm always disappointed. It hardly even qualifies as mexican food in my mind.

I don't think the Oasis is over-rated as a restaurant because EVERYONE knows the food is terrible.
I agree Hut's burgers are nothing special but I think their O-rings are the best I've ever had.
I agree that the Salt Lick is overrated. It is expensive, inconsistent BBQ.
Funny that Gueros is mentioned too. I've been twice, and each time I go - I wonder why people hype it so much.

I second Salt Lick. Not good, but people want to take a "hill country" drive out there as part of the experience. Once the route out there is completely paved over and built around, the whole point will be lost.
I say Conan's Pizza. That place was the shyte back in the early 90's. Nowadays going there is like watching the latest Rocky movie.

I love Salt Lick. I cannot believe you people don't like it. I have NEVER had a bad experience there and we go out there every month. I like Chuys too but I do think it is a bit overrated.
