i am always down for bike riding, kayaking, and hiking. however, i am not really a fan of running. i do force myself to do it, but it isnt something i can say i enjoy lol.

Ok, I just realized that you had a picture in your profile. In my opinion, you are a beautiful example of a perfect woman (head to toe). I don't think you'll have any trouble at all in Austin or anywhere else.

Like someone stated on the 1st page, I also like women I date to be about as fit as I am, certainly not bony, but not chubby, either. Not only is that, to me, not attractive, it's not healthy. But I'm just one guy and can't speak for all Austin men.
I've always been attracted to fit & trim women. Oh, and I'm a guy who doesn't prefer blond women; I like dark and red hair.
The OP shouldn't have a problem dating in Austin, IMO.
Good luck!

i actually was hoping to give fayettveille, ark a try. the people on that board were really sweet and helpful. i just realized though, as a practicing jew, it doesnt have a jewish community which is very important to me. people there were telling me it is like how austin used to be, but that it just doesnt have many jews there. also there are many more schools in the austin area where i would have a better chance of getting a job, vs. in the fayetteville area.
i was looking into relocating into a few cities, and austin just seems to be exactly what i am looking for. i am going back this september with a friend to check it out again. the only cons for me i could think about are the summers (i usually travel my summers anyway so it isnt a factor), and how i might have difficulty dating there like i have here in la. hopefully it isnt a factor though. most guys in austin didnt really strike me as shallow. seemed more down to earth, casual, and earthy which is what i go for.

There are 2 Austins IMO,
There is a Hipster-like crowd. I think you will fit in with them judging from your posts. They tend to hang out on South Congress, South Central Austin(78704 zip code,S First, Lamar, etc), Hyde Park, and Red River District. They are generally more laid-back and less "abercrombie" than your downtown crowd. Very educated, less judgemental on looks, and really doesn't focus on the "in-thing".
The other crowd is the college/post-college graduate crowd. This crowd tends to be more superficial, care about the trendiest bars, clothes, try to be something they're not. (hence your factory looking blondes that all look the same as I said in my earlier post). They primarily hang out in the warehouse district and west 6th street district. This is a generalization, of course many are not like that but its changing to a majority like OC/Dallas type atmosphere. Unfortunately, most of my friends are in that crowd and are exactly as I describe. In 5 years, the downtown crowd will be indisguishable from Newport Beach, CA's crowd.
I wouldn't try Fayetteville, I think is great for students and families but for single people, not really. I worked there for many weeks and got to spend a lot of time there. I would advise against it.
Try Chicago, it has a pretty big Jewish community, lots of cultural activities, bars, easy to meet people, and easy to date. However, you must survive those brutal winters. Which other cities are you considering? Portland, Oregon sounds like a potential match too.
Yes, definitely make another visit and learn to love football.
Good Luck!
BTW, I checked out your profile pic like everyone else did(creepy) and you won't have a problem dating at all in Austin.

oh i am not a hipster, but i probably would have more in common with them that the type 2 you described lol.
i could never do chicago. i am ok with super hot, humid weather (though i hate it) if it was that vs. snow near 0 temperatures. i dont even like going to places like big bear if it is during the winter. i hate the snow and having to wear a million layers.
someone suggested for me portland, but the thing is, they do not have many jobs in my field there. it was actually like that years before the economy changed.
the other cities i checked out were nashville, charleston, and asheville,nc, but austin won out. the parts of nashville i would want to live in are too expensive based on what my salary would be there. same thing with charleston. and asheville like portland doesnt have much of a job market for me, and to my surprise was more expensive than i thought it would be.
i am basing where i would relocate mainly on what my disposable income would be, if it is a good place for singles like myself (la is probably a great place for singles if you really look a certain way, which i do not), jobs in education are widely available and my credentials would transfer (special ed and school counseling), and a jewish community. with the weather, i couldnt handle snow blizzards period, but i could survive long hot summers.
i looked into the miami area, but the pay is crap there, and it pretty much is just like la but on the east coast and instead of mexicans you have cubans as the "minority".
my parents suggested maybe vegas, but i absolutely loathe the city as well as the surrounding areas.

Oh, i'm not saying that you're a hipster but you will definitely have more in common with them and when you move to Austin, you will date a few, trust me. The term "Hipster" is misconstrued as negative in many places, some can be annoying but that's anywhere, any group.
No, not Vegas, I agree with you. Besides the strip, that city is in bad shape and the schools are generally pretty bad. I understand surviving the winters, I just moved back to the North and i'm dreading the winters after 15 years in Austin. If Chicago had Southern California's climate then it would be the best city in the world IMO. Coming from LA, Austin is the best choice of the cities. There are tons of Southern Cali folks in Austin, a few of my friends moved to Austin from SoCal. I think the transistion will be fairly easy(expect for the big cities amenities). Austin does have big city traffic though. You shouldn't have a problem with disposable income, bars, food, outdoor activities are relatively cheap esp. compared to LA.
Also, when looking for a job, I would shy away from the Manor School District. I have a friend of a friend who was very qualified for a position at another school district and should have been hired. They told her that they normally would hire her in a heartbeat but they "DO NOT" hire anyone who's worked in that school district. It has a bad reputation, I really feel bad for the teachers and students there because its unfair.

It sounds like austin is probably going to be a really good fit for you. I think the only problem you might have is the lack of a STRONG jewish community. But to be fair, i'm coming from new york and chicago, so nothing could really compare. There is a jewish community association in austin, and the dell community center is good, but a lot of the activities are more secular( or so i remember). I heard in north austin a jewish community is blossoming.
Latikeriii,I agree that chicago would be pretty much heaven if it had southern cals weather. I miss chicago.

yeah the only thing i would miss from socal is the weather. our summer has been super hot, but the last 2 days werent as bad and i walked a couple miles outside at 3pm. it was very warm, but not that bad.
ok you arent the only one who told me to avoid manor. i hear that school district has pretty much the "riff raff" of the austin area. the thing is though, they pay school counselors the most there (i wonder why lol).
its funny because in la, one prestigious district is similar and has a hate for a certain district and you will be turned away easily because you worked for that one district.
in any case with moving to austin i expect to work as a special ed teacher for at least 2 years because texas wont allow someone to be a counselor if you werent the teacher of record for at least 2 full time years (i have been a sub for 2, but they wont consider it). the other annoying thing is all the damn little districts within the austin area. i have to fill in many online applications and have completely different letters of recommendations (many require different forms). should be an interesting summer next year possibly lol.

i am not very religious, but i like to attend services when i can in a reform or conservative synagogue. i also enjoy it when i encounter many jews and people who identify strongly with it like i do here in la. i know there is a jcc in austin, some synagogues, and jews there- just not a thriving population.
my parents have been looking online for places to retire and looked into georgetown. my parents are less religious than i am, and pretty much are likely not to go to georgetown because they "dont want to be the only jews in town".
