Thoughtful house is pretty pricey but then again having an ASD is a pretty pricey thing also as I am finding out. There are good ASD doctors here but it costs a lot to see them, with or without insurance.

Has anyone here had experience forming a microboard/nonprofit for a child with special needs? It sounds like something for transition planning, but I've read about instances where parents were able to write grant proposals for a child's needs. The ARC of Austin website has some information about forming a microboard. I may be connecting the dots between two separate things, though.

I read on the Thoughtful House website that they will help parents try to find funding assistance.

Also, someone mentioned the University of Texas. I've not heard of the autism program mentioned, but the UT Speech and Hearing Center operates on a sliding scale. Clients are seen by graduate students in speech-language pathology, supervised by licensed SLPs.

You're right capcat...I wasn't calculating the age as child is 10 and Cap School goes to Grade 3. My nephew is autistic and lives in the State of South Dakota. They bent over backwards with funding and help for him since he was a little guy and he is now a thriving 16 year old. He may never live alone but he is highly functioning for the most part and does very well in school. I have many friends that teach at the Capitol School and IMO they are wonderful, committed and caring teachers which is why I thought of it.

Also could try the National Autism Association of Central Texas for information on services in the area...

I agree that Capitol School is great if you can afford it. Round Rock ISD is also a fantastic place for children with ASDs. Our son went to Capitol School until the end of his kindergarten year when we switched to RRISD. RRISD gave us the support we needed through inclusion and providing the services of an aid.

Please do your homework before considering the Thoughtful House. Or better yet, ask what your pediatrician thinks about the school and its founder - Andrew Wakefield.

I have the Thoughtful House confused with another facility. My bad, and enough of my advice.

Capitol School is a great place though, that I know.

I was told that at Capitol School, some of the costs could be covered by insurance!! Because the school curricula/therapy is considered "group therapy" and some insurances cover that!
