Austin Federal Credit Union
Would someone explain the difference between Austin Federal Credit Union and A+ Federal Credit Union? And, why the A+ calls themselves a Federal Credit Union but does not accept employees of the Federal Gov't. (unless you join one of their causes)

A+ used to be Austin Area Teachers Federal Credit Union (or close to it). It's not for Federal Employees but for Austin area teachers and others. "Federal Credit Union" does not imply it's for "Federal" employees; in fact Federal is in alot of their names.

Austin Federal Credit Union used to be the Veterans Administration Data Processing Center (VADPC) Federal Credit Union. It was created in the 1960's for employees of the VADPC office in South Austin on Woodward Street but is now open to people who live in a wider community that is now the credit union's officially designated constituency. And, yes, the phrase "Federal Credit Union" refers to the organization's federal charter as a credit union, not to its affiliation with the VADPC.

Federal Credit Union simply means it is established and insured under federal guidelines. National Credit Union Administration (NCUA)

A+ used to be called Austin Area Teachers Federal Credit Union. Federal laws allowed them to open their membership in many areas beyond just the teachers. It is a very long list which you can see here https://aplusfcu.org/about-us/who-can-join
Don't you now live in Round Rock, any family member with students, faculty or staff at RRISD can join.
It is really quite broad now and includes any family member who has a student attending many of the schools listed. And if that broad list some how misses you, a paltry $10 can make you a member.

4. If you answered ‘NO’ to all the above questions you may join A+FCU by becoming a member of the A+ Education Foundation for only $10. The A+ Education Foundation was established by A+FCU to provide grants to educators in the communities served by A+FCU.

This is much better then Austin TELCO which I currently looked into, they wanted me to tie up $1,000 in a low interest savings account before I could invest in a higher interest CD. I said no thanks.

Yes. However, I was able to find a bank that suited our needs. I'm too hung up on it I know...but when a place advertises itself to be "federal" and doesn't take federal employees as members it seems strange. But that's me...I'm strange too so hey, for what it's worth. (which isn't much) I've been accused of being too literal. (I don't mind...I've been called much worse)
Also, thank you all for the information. I think I may have a few new brain cells. But I'm convinced by tomorrow morning they'll be gone...then I'll have to harp on something new.

Yeah that is a little too literal if its preventing you from joining an organization that often has the best loan and CD savings rates in the area. We have been members for 32 years and have benefited greatly from it.
Every Credit Union that I am aware of claims to be a Federal Credit Union, even it it is not in their name. Your missing the boat here.
