I also always thank whoever holds the door open for me when I'm entering or exiting someplace. Again, unlike a lot of people (and when they don't I used to do the angry/sarcastic "YOUR WELCOME!" to their back causing them to look back at me like I'M the crazy one! More recently, I do a very sweet "Oh! You're welcome!" with a big smile just as though they've thanked me. Somehow, it's more satisfying, and it kind of makes me laugh).

Politeness has seem to really fallen by the wasteside in recent years... I suspect due to all the mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers with their 4+ kids as well as the fact that everyone's always in a hurry. And, quite honestly, I think it's contributing to the breakdown in society. If we all took that extra half a second to thank each other, it would be a much better place. I go out of my way to make other people feel good (most of the time) because I truly believe they will "pay it forward." Just like we all "pay it forward" when someone treats us like crap.
I totally agree with everything you said!

I'm from CT, thinking of moving to TX (Austin).

If I can easily "say thanks" (waving) to a courteous road user, then I do, no problem with that.

I found Dallas Drivers (northern suburbs) were noticeably more courteous to me while cycling there, compared to CT.
