Hello everyone,

My mother spent a portion of her childhood in Austin. She's always talked about Texas, and the good weather. She does mention some of the downfalls, for instance you probably should not have a garden, because of trees. You have to be careful of trees, because there could be a snake or snakes in the tree. I've heard you have to look up and be aware of your environment, because of snakes and tarantulas.

So...Does anyone have their own personal garden? Do you stay away from this, because of snakes and tarantulas?

Thank you for answering my questions.

Dee

We have a wonderful garden with raised beds. No snakes or tarantulas. It sounds like an old wives tale.

I have always had a garden. My parents always have a garden.

You got rats and mice in the garden, you will have snakes.
Snakes don't bother me at all. I actually have a rat snake I caught in some stacked flower pots, and a Gardner snake I caught in the grass of the front yard, he eats worms and lizards.

The snakes keep the rodent population in check. Leave them alone, and they will leave you alone.

I can't wait to have a garden in Austin - in raised beds. I also think the snake and tarantulas thing sounds rather like a "wives tale". I have spent a lot of time under trees in Austin, and in never occurred to me that a snake would fall out. And if it does, the chance that it will be poisonous, that it will hit you just right so that you are bitten, etc., well that seems a bit fantastic to me. To me, the biggest conflict between trees and gardens is the density of the shade; no good tomatoes in the shade.

The only snakes you will see in trees around here, is a rat snake, looking for a bird nest to raid its eggs.
If your along the river, you may see a diamond back water snake in a tree on a low to the water limb, fishing for his food.

LOTS of gardens in Austin. Lots of community gardens (http://www.sunshinecommunitygardens.org/ - broken link), too. Have been forever. Don't know what your mother was thinking.

We have a garden. It's not raised bed because we're east of I35, not on the limestone but on the blackland prairie that's in part of Austin (though we're not, we're close enough to count for "can you have a garden in Austin" purposes).

Johnson's Backyard Garden (which is now a thriving two farm venture) would dispute that, too.

As an aside, isn't this like the third thread from you about snakes? They are few and far between in the city.

LOL. You may be right. I'm a little paranoid about the snake thing. I try to keep in mind that I will be in the city...definitely not in a rural area. I guess I can't help but to think about snake, because in Wisconsin you can live your whole life without ever seeing a snake.

Well...It's nice to know that you can have a garden there. I just thought that people would stay away from that because of the "possibilities" that a person could encounter.

Thank you all for replying to my thread.

Dee
