i've a couple of family vhs tapes i'd like to get transitioned to digital format -- any recommendations on the process or your experience using a specific company?

I don't have any experience with a company that does that, but I can tell you it's pretty easy to do yourself.

Most TV tuner cards for PCs will have the software you need to capture your VHS tapes into digital format. You may need to study up on encoding formats, though, and then you'll need to do a bit more work if you want to then put them on DVD that you can play in any player. The computer method gives you best control over the quality.

However, the easiest method is just to buy a DVD recorder. You can get them at walmart. Like this one: Walmart.com: Sony 1080P Upconvert DVD Recorder and Player: DVD & Blu-ray Players. Just play your tapes and hit record on the DVD player, and you are good to go. You can also then transfer the DVD files to a computer for backup or copying.

You could use a scanner for slides, there are some smaller ones made just for that purpose too.
