nankjay - posters like Artsyguy bring out the worst of people here.

My parents live in San Antonio (since 1975) and I visit them regularly. I went to one year of high school there.

San Antonio's weather is really indistiguishable from Austin. Public transportation is probably a bit better, but it is not great by any standard.

San Antonio is distinct in Texas because of a majority Hispanic population. Heavy tourism industry. 2nd tier universities except for Trinity University - an excellent liberal arts school. San Antonio also has a long military base history - less so now because of base closings over the last twenty years.

It is worth looking at. It is slightly more affordable than Austin. Less educated population. Clean air and medium crime level.

yep, we have one just like him on the AR board. Luckily our guy doesn't post as often, bu when he does it is negative. He will pop up just to let us know the gal at the drug store didn't even smile at him or the people are all rude or someone cut him off. yada, yada, yada. All you can do is put these people out of your mind.

San Antonio is like 70% Hispanic...which doesn't automatically translate into tolerant, flamboyantly progressive or world wise, oddly enough.

It does make it unique in America but not really in Texas.

It's fiscally liberal but socially quite conservative. They passed ANOTHER law to ban gay marriage as if the state one wasn't enough...and the air force and army bases (Esp Ft. Sam with the health care) seem to play a big role in bringing in Vets (like my dad 30 years ago) and their family which effect the political character of the city.

Still, it's a large city and if you look reeeally hard you'll find a niche.

Maybe.

Personally, things are a bit too spread out (in Texas and in SA) for my taste but 'to each their own'...as I've learned to say in this forum.
