Default Best Mexican Food

I have went to many tex mex places, and really not very happy with what I have found. I'm looking for a restaurant that serves more than just hamburger, and fajitas. I love carnitas, barbacoa, picadillo, and al pastor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It would be helpful knowing what places you were disappointed in, in order to recommend new places.

Do you really want Tex-Mex, or something else?

No, I'm looking for Mexican restaurants that serve the meats listed. I shouldn't say disappointed in all I have tried, just looking for one that offers more meat selections. Been and liked Chuy's and Baby A's, just want a place that offers more meat selections.

There is a thread on this subject already. They all recommended Azul Tequila. We went there. Very good, but I wouldn't call excellent. Very nice service. I guess when it comes to ethnic food nothing beats being in the country of origin of the food. Never been to Mexico, but I bet food is nothing like what you find here.

I can't find places here in Austin like I go to in San Antonio.

My first pre-req is that they have good homemade flour tortillas and that automatically leaves a handful of places. I still haven't found my go to place.

I just want some really good chicken verde enchiladas w/ sour cream on top and homemade flour tortillas. If you know where that is please tell me.

It's more of a taco stand than a restaurant, but I'm pretty sure that Torchy's has barbacoa and carnitas at least.

You won't. Good homemade flour tortillas stop at the Travis County line. All the "great" ones in Austin would be discarded south of here. I heard one old tortilla maker say that the water in SA is better for tortillas than it is in Austin. Dunno if that's true but that's supposedly why we can't get a authentic NY bagel or pizza crust here.

Some of the recommendations above are NOT Mexican restaurants they are Tex-Mex.

I love and often eat authentic Mexican food, and here is what i have found.

La Fonda San Miguel - Pricey but excellent, probably the best.

El Pollo Rico - Multiple locations throughout Austin, they serve roasted chicken and it is UNBELIEVABLE. They have a location at 9437 N I H 35, Austin, TX‎, It is in the far RIGHT of a shopping center with a laundromat and a conveinece store. at the far LEFT they have a taco and torta stand that I believe has the best tacos and tortas in Austin.

Taqueria Las Chivas Jalisco - 8624 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX‎ and has the best Huevos Rancheros.
