Default Austin specialty products or food?

I am putting together a basket and we like to fill it with mostly Austin products but I can't think of something specific to Austin but not cheesy. Was going to start out with Tito's vodka BUT this person just quit drinking....

any ideas?

Check out the Austin Visitor's Center on 6th and Brazos, they have a lot of local packaged food, cd's and other gifts that would go well in a basket

I've never been to this place but I have read about it in the community news paper and it looks like a very cool place to get the kind of gifts you are talking about Products Texas Spice Company (http://www.texas-spice.net/products.html - broken link)

Depending on your friend's sense of humor, I got a good chuckle out of my great uncle when I sent him a big orange t-shirt from Sixth Street that says, "F*** Y'all, I'm From Texas." He said he wore it to the snooty, well-to-do Starbucks around the corner.

Believe it or not, I also got some great Austin mugs at the airport. Pricey, but really cool.

I agree, that's a pretty good Austin gift. They seem cheesy, especially to people who actually live in Austin, but many of them I've seen actually look pretty good. You can get them at places like Amy's ice cream.

Other Austin institutions have cool shirts too. Austin City Limits, Stubbs, Opal Devine's, the Oasis... I'm sure there are many more.

As for sauces/salsas/etc, you might be able to get everything you need at this hot sauce shop on 6th street: http://www.tearsofjoysauces.com. They make their own brand, and carry local stuff.

Maybe look for some local art... empty bowl project is coming up:
Austin Empty Bowl Project (http://www.austinfoodbank.org/aebp/home.html - broken link)

You can buy a flag that has been flown over the Texas state capitol -
Flag Sales - House of Representatives

And of course, there's MUSIC -- buy something from local artists. Waterloo Records & Video - Online CD Store and Texas Music Catalog (http://www.waterloorecords.com/home.html - broken link) has a special section for local artists; and they'll be able to steer you in the right direction.

... then walk across Lamar and visit Book People (large local bookstore) as well; you could get the Leslie dress-up magnets, and I'm sure they have other local stuff. Whole Foods is right there, too.
