Of course some people are blinded because things never happen to them but a lot of Blacks(and some Mexicans) been denied at bars for "dress code" right after super-intoxicated white guys with shorts and sandals were let in. In reality, there are many bars that do not want too many minorities in it. Specifically many of these bars who are owned by Lebanese guys. They mostly hate Blacks(not all minorities). I know for sure, I know the owners and lot of guys that work for them so don't be surprised if you get hassled at these bars if your dress is questionable.
Spill, Treasure Island(lesser degree), Pure(most trouble), Qua, all owned by the same owner and minorities have had a lot of problems with those bars. Funny thing is the owner liked me individually but not Blacks as a whole. I'm not just spewing talk, I know for sure. Just dress accordingly and don't go in big groups(like 4 of more black males for example) and you shouldn't have many problems. My point was that a white college kid could get in regardless of dress code and that many bars don't like too many minorities in their bars. Bouncers are told by their managers and owners to discriminate against certain patrons. I used to work downtown and know the scene very well.

The managers at those places that I listed had a saying: If you're white, you're alright, if you're Brown, stick around, if you're Black, stay back! No joke, that's why I stayed away from those places.

Anyways, the other posters listed good bars so have fun!

Oh, and this happens everywhere, not just in Austin. It happens in your so-called diverse big cities like NYC, and Chicago.
