Well that explains a lot.

My wife took the written test and a month later she appeared for the driving test (she was never licensed from anywhere else). And she did get the license. And if a driver like her can get the license... (i hope she don't read this... ), then anybody can.
The hardest part in the driving test would be the parallel parking. Rest everything would be easy.
This is not exactly correct. If you take driver's training, you do not have to take an "in car" test. Here is some info from the Texas dops website.
The student must take a written and vision examination prior to receiving the Texas Driver License Instruction permit. However, the skills (driving) test will be waived for teenagers who complete both classroom and behind-the-wheel portions of a Texas driver education course. The instructor participating in the Parent Taught Driver Education Program has the option to waive the skills (driving) test or require the student to pass the skills (driving) test administered by DPS prior to issuing a Class C driver license.
For more info about obtaining a driver's license in Texas, please go to:
Texas Department of Public Safety - Parent Taught Driver Education (http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/driver_licensing_control/parenttaught.htm - broken link)

What was funny is when we went to state office, we thought it was closed because there was not a line of people coming out the door. It was open, and we got service in about 15 minutes after entering!!! I took the whole day off from work since we were thinking about the 4-5 hours it usually took in CA.
No 5 hour line? GREAT!

Which office did you go to

What do I need to take: my NC driver's license, proof of insurance, proof of Austin address?

Do I need to have registered my car in TX first? (I won't have my car here until about a month after I arrive).

Anyone have the web link for the procedure/rules?

Thanks.

Unless you are under 18, you will have to take the driver's test.

We just took our son to the DPS on South 1st street. We arrived about 8:10am and waited less than 5 minutes. If you need to take the test, however, you need to go in person to make an appointment to take it. I would hope with an appointment, you wouldn't have to wait too terribly long.
