I am a 28 year old single female and I am going o be moving to Austin from California in a few months. I will be moving alone and I don't know anyone out there. I'm not very familiar with the area and I was hoping you could give me some ideas of what areas would be ideal for me to find an apartment. I'm obviously going to want to be near some night life but maybe not directly downtown. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!!

Why does everyone from California feel the need to move here?!

If you can tell us where you will be working, it will be easier to give you some recommendations. Also, what's your budget? Commuting can be a real pain, so ideally you'll want to live close to where you work.

Dear M.O.P., (may I call you MOP?)...because maybe there is an actual need to move, not because "they feel the need to" as you suggested.

FWIW It can be pricey anywhere around downtown, but as Moonlady suggested, knowing more about your criteria is important. Welcome to Austin!

Nothing is in immediate DT except condos, and some rentals of units that were never sold, so soco is the way to go, but much of that is at least a mile walk if not several, from DT. I do it all the time, as I live there, but not everyone is into walking 2 miles to DT, or paying to park there if they live 2 miles away. That's why I hang more often right on Congress, as I can walk right there. There's

We really do need some more information about you. As said, where you'll be working, what you like to do, what your budget is likely to be. It is more pricey closer to downtown, but "close" can be relative. Do you want a house, a condo, an apartment? Do you want to be close to hike and bike trails or parks, or are you happier with clubs (not that the two are mutually exclusive, but if one prevails in your preferences, that would help point you in the right direction). How far is a "long commute" for you? (I've learned that this varies dramatically depending on what people are used to where they are coming from.) That kind of thing.

Paint us a picture of your perfect life and how much you can pay for it and we'll see what we can do!

By the way, since you're moving alone and don't know anyone here, you might want, once you get here, to try www.Meetup.com. You can meet a lot of people, newcomers and long time residents, who share your interests, pretty quickly that way.

If you have never been here before then I suggest you rent for at least 1 year to find out if you like it here or not.
