I was wondering if anyone could tell me information about the towns of Elgin and Bastrop. We were thinking of buying a house in that area and were wondering on how it is in general. Is it a nice area? How are the schools (good or bad)? Is it a good area to raise children? How is the crime? Is there a lot of crime? How are the people? How is the commute to main areas in Austin? Is it a good place to live? Any info is much appreciated. Also would anyone recommend any other areas with houses with acreage ($200-300,000) that are nice. Thanks in advance.

Going by school districts, Bastrop would be my pick. Elgin is not good. Both places are actually nice, but I think Bastrop is prettier. A friends nieces live in Bastrop, although I think they go to private school. Both are competitive horse riders (jumping) and in a local cheerleading club. I don't think it's got bad crime, they're both just kind of country, not a lot of money floating around. I think Bastrop is being more developed right now than Elgin, which would be another plus. I doubt the commute from Elgin or Bastrop is very bad, as 290 is nearby. I think most people on this board will steer you west and southwest of Austin, but I have love for both sides of 35.

I'm just giving my view, as I drive through there often when I go to Houston.

Bastrop, imho, is much more attractive due to the wooded areas. Elgin has been farm country for many, many years....

Smile Just my thoughts

We moved here from California in March this year. We are a military family, we bought a home in Elm Creek, which is between Manor and Elgin. I persoanlly have had no problems with the schools in Elgin. New homes are coming in and that is affecting the schools in a good way. Parents are getting more involved and more active in the schools. My kids were honor roll kids in California, Virginia, Florida, and now Texas too. Now I am not saying that they go to the best school but it is alot better than people give it credit for.

Hope I did not offend anyone as that is not what I am trying to do.

Not offended at all. My neighbor, who was a teacher said the reason Elgin schools were below the others was because it was rural, not like an inner city school or anything. I live in Hutto, and it's a good school district as well, and I spend a lot of time having to dispel past histories as well. When I looked at the stats online, there were only a few schools in Elgin that had questionable ratings (below recognized)

Yeah, I think a lot of people don't want to admit that the problem with their kids' school is their kids.

It reminds me of an article I read a year ago about how all these families bought in a subdivision to get away from crime in the city and they were upset that there was a ton of petty crime going on in the new neighborhood. The police chief told them "what did you expect? You brought the criminals with you."

One thing Elgin is certainly excelling in: girls' softball. The Elgin team will be playing Wednesday night on ESPN2 for the North American championship. That little town produced a team that beat Canada's team by a score of 15-0 in the playoffs. Impressive!

But I guess that's rather off-topic relative to educational quality. And as long as I'm off-topic, I'll add that Elgin has better barbecue places than Bastrop.

Or more to the point, the lack of parental involvement. So many parents wash their hands of it once they send the kid off to school... and point the finger in the other direction when their kid fails.

The school can't do it all! Frankly, recognized, acceptable, exemplary means very little if it's not reinforced at home.
