"texans"
So, tell me....since there are soooo many transplants to the great state of Texas...How long is one required to reside in Texas before calling him/herself a "Texan"?!?!?
I love the quote..."I wasn't born here, but I got here as fast as I could"

I think you can probably pass for a Texan if you wear the uniform and speak the language...
Do you have the boots, hat and jeans?? Its very important that the Hat be Resistal for summer or Stetson felt for winter, the jeans need to be Wrangler and the boots need to be the round toed Justin...
Pick up the twang and in your in...

Um, if you're moving to Austin, I wouldn't wear that "uniform" unless you want to really stand out.

I do have the "uniform" but usually only wear it when I am visiting Fort Worth. I probably would wear it to The Broken Spoke as well!! But normally I don't dress like that. I have been working on my "y'all's" and trying to lose the Pittsburgh slang of "youns"
BUT, is there a required length of time when I can shout from the roof tops "Hey everyone, I'm a TEXAN!"?? Someone told me I have to live there at least 1 year before I am permitted to claim that title!!

I honestly don't run into many people in Austin with a "twang", and it is a very rare sight to see a cowboy hat.

Fort Worth has a long history of Cattle ranching so it makes sense that folks dress like that...remnants of a cowboy culture. Austin is more ecclectic and has the state capitol/college town culture.
But hell, I live in Cleveland and occaisionally wear cowboy boots...I've loved them since I was a kid. I think people should wear whatever "uniform" they like no matter where they live. Whatever is comfortable and flatters you is "in style" as far as I'm concerned.
On another note, once you vote, pay taxes, go through all the different seasons I think one is officially a "local".

I think after you've spent more than half your adult life here, you can claim to be a Texan. I've lived in Austin for 22 years, so I consider myself an established Austinite even though I grew up in San Diego.
I was in fact born in Texas though. Being born here give you the right to claim it no matter how many years you've live here.
