yeah I kinda got the same vibe as well. Most people here don't care how much you make or what car you drive or what clothes (as long as they are orange or maroon). I'd visit here before moving at a minimum, maybe visit other places as well.

1) I want a city that has a lot of people my age.
2) I don't care if they care, I just don't want to cut any more ridiculous checks to the state of California.
3) A women that drinks beer and eats BBq is more real than a women here sipping water eating vegan food. I guess you have never taken a girl living in L.A. out for dinner? You don't know what your missing
4) Oh really, so If I hire around 6 people at 50K a year that isn't enough of a contribution? Then what is?
5) The illegals in Austin don't have the rights that they do here in L.A. which is what gets to me most.

Born and breed in California, and fed up.
.
1) Every city, including LA, has people that are 24, dude. Moving to Austin is not your only answer.

2) Taxes are a fact of life wherever you go. I don't know what you are paying in CA, but if you buy a house or property here in Austin, you will be paying a whole bunch of property taxes. Make sure to check the TX state website and compare Austin Property taxes on a hypothetical home versus CA income tax and property tax. If you do move to Austin, making what you are making, it doesn't make good fiscal sense to rent. It's cheaper most of the time to buy your own place, especially if you can swing a down payment, which we know you can because you told us over and over again ad nauseum.

3) A woman that drinks beer and eats BBQ might be more of a "real woman" for you, but most women that drink beer and eat BBQ aren't going to date you just for your money. No offense, but from your post, it seems like that is all you have going for you. You need something of a personality to get the Texas women I have heard. Although I am no expert in that arena.

4) The Austin Metro area has well over a million people. Employing 6 of them doesn't make up for pretentiousness.

5) That is debateable. If you read these forums often you will find about one billion posts (usually from the same 3 people) talking about the rights illegal aliens have. Undocumented workers are a fact of life in any urban area in America, Austin included. The problems you stated you had with illegals in your OP, are going to occur in Austin as well. You are not escaping that.

CONCLUSION: All in all, I hope you find what you are looking for. I am not one of those posters that don't want you to move to Austin just because you are from California. Austin might be a good fit for you. Maybe Dallas and Fort Worth would as well (I am thinking Fort Worth). But the fact of the matter is, there is no city on earth that you can't make a home for yourself in. You can't have more than a million people in a city and not be able to find a niche where you fit in.

You strike me as a conservative who thinks "well TX is conservative, they will accept me with open arms" which is not the case at all. A lot of my New York friends feel the same way. The fact of the matter is, No city in Texas is really conservative. Most urban centers aren't. I don't want to overreach here, but I can't imagine why you would describe yourself as a conservative in the OP, unless you thought it would gain you allies? Most Texans, especially Austinites, just don't care! The ones who do care....well, they may not be the ones you want to be friends with. They are usually either young/older families, which are akward to hang out with if you are a single trying to date, OR they are the militia type, and they are just plain scary.

Good luck! Have fun in your search! Moving can be very exciting.

However, most of the people in Austin are pretty laid back, kind and care about the community...

You only mentioned how much money you make 3 or 4 times.

I lived in Austin about 17 years.. so a couple of clues---

1) Austin is widely regarded as the most liberal city in Texas. If you are looking for a conservative city try Dallas.
2) No one here cares how much money you make.
3) I'm not sure that drinking beer, and eating BBQ makes women somehow more real
4) You make Austin a better place with your contributions to the community. No one gives a rats ass about your presence, and your presence alone doesn't improve the city.
5) There are plenty of illegals in Austin.
Ditto.

Tony, I think you might run into a "when in Rome, do as Romans" sort of situation in Austin. By that I mean that the demeanor, instincts, persona, attitude, etc. that have helped you survive and get where you are in LA will most likely impede your ability to assimilate and be liked and accepted in Austin.

Frankly, you come across is someone who is opposite of everything Austin is about. We're more likely to brag to friends about the $7 jeans we just bought at Savers, than we are about our material gains. Nobody cares, at all, about your spending capacity, income level, or material possessions. A "real" Texas beer drinking gal who eats meat wold be repulsed by the "trying hard to impress you" veneer of a self absorbed dude who likes to talk about himself and how much (not that much, really $80K?) he makes.

If you value a community that recognizes and rewards outward evidence and proclamations of material consumption, Austin won't be a good fit for you, though I'm sure there might be cliques you could find, but those would be considered the undesirable crowd by most of us.

So chill out, hit the reset button on your mindset, and maybe come for a visit and check things out. Austin is a place to be who you are, not who you want people to think you are.

Steve

Tony,

Your big mistake was mentioning that you are a conservative and that you make your own money rather than rely on government handouts, thats why you are getting attacked (even though they claim you are being attacked for being 'pretentious').

As you probably know, Austin is liberal compared to the rest of Texas, However, most people in LALA land (or the east coast), would consider an austin liberal as a Palin-loving conservative.

WE need more people like you who are willing to bring Jobs to Austin, good luck!

I assumed from the profanity-laced, over-the-top, "look at how cool I am" attitude of the OP that his whole post was a joke, just designed to get a response. I could be wrong, though.

I want midwest women, $1 beer nights, BBQ, and honkytonks. I want a quality life! I am far too young and make too much money to be in this **** hole. I want real women who drink beer, shoot pool and eat BBQ.

And no I'm not looking for a job in Austin, I will be bringing jobs to Austin! REAL JOBS not the push broom and shovel type. Tech jobs and a potential for future growth. I'm bringing my business and inventory with me.

Come on down!

Don't listen to those who say otherwise. This is why:

- If you're conservative in SoCal, you'll be middle of the road here.
- Most who are giving you grief are newbies themselves.
- Even though you said "midwest"....most of us know what you mean. The girls here are much closer to "midwest" than "housewives of the OC" etc.....so you're good there.
- If you're bringing yourself & possibly new jobs, we want you. (Especially if you're not opening up a new healthfood store or angling for an in-& out franchise).
- You want women who drink beer & know that BBQ is a noun & not a verb.....Good for you. (Be sure to visit Luling & Lockhart on your visit).

This board has more of a lib....volvo slant. But Austin is overall pretty eclectic, so you'll do fine here.

Reading the other posts, I am inclined to agree. I seem to have been tricked into posting onto this thread.

To Blakesq though, no one attacked the OP for being conservative. No one even really attacked him at all, they responded to his post with the same tenor and respect as he had when he wrote it.

Many of the people who told him Austin might not be a good fit have multiple conservative leaning posts on other issues, so he is not the victim of some "liberal bias".

I suspect though that this IS indeed a joke posting, one designed to start flame wars, so I will just leave it at that.

Thanks Blakesq!

I don't think these guys know what a true liberal socialistic society is. I have a great idea, those of you who think your cool because your "liberal" let's trade places, you can come in live in L.A. and pay more than your fair share in taxes for all the illegals just so that they can have their food stamps and welfare. C'mon this is the coolest place ever!

You can pay high rent here in L.A. for a ****ty place (about 2x as much). You can pay taxes galore to help feed your comrades and house them. If your so liberal and willing to help others, then why not take in a few mexicans to live with you while your at it. You can work your ass off to pay bills while they work for all cash mowing lawns.

Steve and Jay I am interested in knowing how much you guy's produce in this society? 80K is the salary I lowered myself to in order to avoid wasting money on taxes.

See the liberals don't get it, the business owners and the rich will just manipulate their books within their company to avoid paying more taxes. So instead of making 150K-200K a year I just and seeing all that money go to USSA, I just lower my salary to 80K a year and spend the profits to the point where their is nothing left to get taxed on. I do things like take trips to Europe, buy equipment for the company, go out to eat fancy meals more often with friends and claim them as taking a "client" out to dinner for write offs.

The jokes on y'all.

Just remember this Tony, if your planning on going down south, (by the way, that's going to be a major culture shock!), not a lot of people are going to be happy hearing your coming from L.A!!!
Matter of fact, your probably going to tick a lot of people off! Texas and C.A go together like
water and oil. Especially, if you go there with a C.A attitude and demeanor. So, just be ready!

By the way I'm starting to think the liberals are more pretentious than the conservatives, if I'm not part of their "granola eating", "vintage wearing", "anti-business" clan then I guess I'm not cool.
