Downtown Houston was hopping 8-10 years ago, but apparently the scene has moved west a few miles, from what I'm told. Similar thing that happened to Deep Ellum in Dallas.

Anyway, I've never associated "ATX" with anything hip-hop or ghetto. Several Austin friends use it, and they don't exactly fit into those categories.

And does anyone else on here almost always refer to cities as "the City of ____"? I do it ALL the time, and I sound so silly in normal conversation. But it's my job...can't help it.

The only people I know who refer to Austin as "ATX" are either in the hip hop community or they moved here in the last 5 years.

While we're on the subject of pet peeves with titles - my pet peeve is people who refer to the South Congress area as SoCo and/or the South Lamar area as SoLa. No self-respecting Austin native and/or long-time resident would be caught dead uttering such hipster nonsense.

I like it. I use them both. Although it's a rip off from "ATL" it's still original as "ATX". nice change up from time to time.

I remember South Congress before it got "discovered" (poor thing) and I stopped going there whereas I used to patronize some of the stores frequently. Used to live in SoLa and still own a house there (and, yes, you're right, no one who's been there - or here - for any length of time would call it that - I first heard it and wondered what on earth the person was talking about, there was no place in Austin called "SoLa").

I kind of like SoCo, it has a nice ring to it -SoLa and LoCo (Lower Congress) are a bit too much for me though!
