Our builder Taylor Morrison has used wrong color/shade tile then what we selected at builder's design center. The picture taken by the design center shows that it is much lighter colored. They are suggesting that it is the same tile. I am concerned that the builder may try to manipulate with the tile we picked when we go to the design center on Wednesday.

There were other tiles we selcted for bathrooms and they seem to match with the picture taken by the design center but the one for the kitchen/foyer does not match. So the photo taken seem to represent the right color/shade in my opinion.

I am not sure how to deal with this situation so that I am being treated fairly. Any suggestions will be great.

Thanks.

Rather than matching colors to a picture, did you get the identification numbers/color number on the tile? No questions about that.

The document we received suggests that it is Level3, the Cliffs Color: Brown 18x18. The document does have picture of the tile but does not have detailed identification number. The photo shows that that tile is LIGHT brown but what we see is Dark blackish red tile.

Tiles vary greatly by lot. I selected some tiles and when they delivered them to the house, they were definitely different than what I thought I had picked out. I had a sample and the tiles that were delivered were much grayer and didn't have the reddish vein I wanted. Fortunately, we were able to go back to the store and exchange them for some different tiles before they installed them. I would not have been happy with the ones they delivered.

When we had our bathroom remodeled, the tiles we selected had two different shades in the same lot that was purchased. They ended up looking OK with the different variations, but it's totally the nature of the tiles.

I don't think the builder is doing anything wrong intentionally. If they haven't been installed yet, try to get them to exchange it for something else if you don't like the ones they offered.

Go to the house and search for the boxes, it will say on the boxes what kind of tile it is. Remember, lighting is different in a showroom so it could be the same tile.

Yes, always have everything documented. You can also get the tile rep used by the builder to come have a look.

But buried in the pile of stuff you signed is something that says there will be color variations in paint, natural stone, tiles, etc. and that you understand and accept that. This is a common situation, which is why you want to have actual documentation of what you selected and what was installed. Unless they don't match, you may be stuck.

Good luck,

Steve

Did you pick a tile from an actual sample at the design center, or from a photograph? Photo reproductions can be very misleading.

I assume the photo you refer to is a photo of the samples you picked. A photo of what you picked wouldn't necessarily look exactly the same as the tile it was taken of. But one would think you could go back to the design center and find the exact sample you picked from. The grain and texture on the tile should be identifiable from the photo even if the tint and color looks a little different.

It is also true as others have said that the color range in some tiles can vary considerably. But the design center should be presenting you with something that represents a reasonable sample.

I have often been surprised when picking a paint color from a chip, how different it looks when applied to a larger area.

The design center really should have given you a list of the products, color numbers, names, when you made your selection.

I do have list of the tiles used but it does not have the ID number. Color stated on the list is brown but the one installled is different color.

Stuff happens when there or so many middlemen, before it actually gets slapped on the floor.

If all your paper work is correct, it will get fixed.

There are many different reasons as to why the shade is different..could be tile company's fault.
