Hey everyone,

I'm considering possibly relocating to Austin around February or so. I was born and raised in So cal, lived here my whole life, I live about 20 minutes from downtown LA now, and I'm just looking for a change of pace and a new adventure! My best friend and her hubby will be moving out there around the same time, possibly a little before. I was just curious about a few things....

1. I make about 35K a year at my current job working in an office...will I be able to find something at the same pay rate there? I know housing prices are a lot less expensive, but what I pay now for my tiny little shoebox of a one bedroom is not far off what I'd be paying in Austin for an apartment, so the only difference in my budget would be gas, food, and utilities. Aside from housing, is there a big difference in the cost of living?

2. How are the allergies in Austin? Worse than in LA? I suffer pretty bad here although I try to keep it under control. I also have pretty bad asthma.

3. Bugs - I'm not a big fan of bugs or any sort of creepy-crawlies that shouldn't be in my house. What can I expect?

4. Which neighborhoods are good and which are bad? I'm a 28 year old female who will be living alone, so I don't want to end up living in the ghetto with crackheads for neighbors!!

5. Anything else you can think of that a So Cal transplant would want/need to know? I'm not big on going to the beach, so I don't expect that to be much of a problem.

At 28 I think you can really enjoy the austin nightlife. The average age is pretty young (maybe 32?). You also wont find any $18 cocktails in austin. I dont know exactly what your job is, but our admins typically make about 35-40K. I would reommend renting downtown and getting a roommate in a larger apt.

I know the prices in LA and if you can make the same $ here you will have a much improved lifestyle.
