Great responses so far. Yes, I agree there are various styles in Austin. I was just referring to that one style.

Regardless of the cell-phone, I think just as many people are into watches now as there were in the past. (If they don't use one now, chances are they wouldn't have before either.) They are even more popular today. There are at least 100 versions of the Timex Ironman today, whereas 10 years ago there were about 2 or 3.

I disagree, I stopped wearing a watch when my Casio quite working and I realized that both my cell phone and my digital organizer had clocks and were easier to set to remind me of appointments.

I don't know how handy the cell phone would be on a mountain bike ride, rafting, running, diving, swimming, playing tennis, etc, etc. Never mind the places that frown on cell phone use. Certainly, the phone could be used as a timepiece at certain times, but it sure is easy to glance at my wrist when I'm busy doing other things. Long live the wristwatch.

Mickey Mouse watch or a classic 50's/60's watch to go with that Ford Fairlane. That's what I'd picture S. Congress Austinites wearing.

I needed to replace my watch battery about 6 months ago, never got around to it and just stopped wearing a watch. My car has a clock as does my computer. When I ask people for the time, most consult their phones, very few have watches. I work on a college campus, this seems to be the trend, I'd say fewer than half of our students wear watches.
This will change soon. If any here recall the Dick Tracy comic strip, he wore a TV/phone/watch combo sort of thing. I always assumed the hat was his dish.

The more powerful but compact components become the sooner we'll be wearing our tv's on our wrists. With a small bluetooth ear bud. The professors will never know someone is feeding you the answers.

Very true. I went watchless for about a decade until my wife bought me one for father's day 2 years ago - Citizen EcoDrive with woven band. They are relatively cheap with little maintenance - like your typical Austinite. When visiting in the 90's, it was pointed out to me on numerous occasions by strangers that I most likely wasn't from Austin because I wore a watch. I switched to my cell for time until a couple of years ago (no land line since 98').

What kind of watch would this person wear?

I imagine an inexpensive, water-resistant sporty watch. Like a Casio or Timex digital.
why wear a watch when you can look at the sun?

but hey, if you need a watch i don't see any reason to purchase anything else but Operation Cabestan: When two independents come together to shake up the world of watches.
