My girlfriend and I would like to go out more and finally have opportunity. Where do mature couples go for a night on the town - drinks and dancing, the usual ? We would prefer NW austin area, but will travel farther if necessary.

What type of dancing? I'm close to your age (late 30 something). When we get a chance to go out, we go to places like Cool River and Sherlocks to watch bands play. We don't really go out for dancing unless we go downtown and stop into a dance club/bar.

Go downtown to West 6th, Warehouse District, or 2nd street. It will be worth the extra drive.

Not being familiar with the area, are there any places in particular you could reccomend. Someplace for older crowd that mixes in "oldies" music would be fun.

Many thanks.

What is considered "oldies" these days? Also, there is very little recorded music clubs in Austin. Everything is pretty much live music, and much of it isn't so danceable...

But places that come to mind, not necessarily for dancing but a nice mixed age crowd would be places like Antone's and The Belmont..

Come to think about it, maybe you'd also like the Starlight Cafe at the Oasis. They have salsa dancing, as well as some cover bands / 80s stuff, and the crowd skews a little older IMO...

Check out NXNW (North by Northwest.) Cool River was a good suggestion.

Default Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Also found Vivo by Lakeline Mall. Check out the small room with the wrap-around couch and pin-ups on the ceiling.

We used to enjoy the Water Tank! An old-fashioned bar with live music and open-mic nights, simple and basic, absolutely no frills but fun and friendly.

The Water Tank, Austin Restaurant and Nightclub with LIVE Austin Texas Music, and Leading the Karaoke Scene with The Most Fun inside Austin City Limits!

Just ran into three wine bars on Burnett and about 45th. Try that for an opener. Then drink and drive your way to another place because of the lack of public transportation, get a dui, lose your license and then your job. Cheers.
