We are relocating to the Austin area and are searching for a good bank. Should we just stick to a national bank, such as Bank Of America? I don't know much about the local banks and noticed many in my search for area ones; are there ones with good incentives or ones to stay away from? We are looking for simple checking/saving accounts.

I'd stay away from Bank of America, especially because of their horrible handling of this situation:

Good Experience - Broken: Bank of America jailing a customer (http://www.goodexperience.com/blog/archives/001053.php - broken link)

Many people are boycotting them because of that... I can't see giving them any money.

If you want a national bank, Wachovia or Wells Fargo seem well represented here. Wachovia is supposed to be very good if you even have an identity theft problem; I use Wells Fargo, but that's because they bought out my old local bank. I must say, there are LOTS of Wells Fargo ATMs around here.

Did you get any good advise on this? We just moved and are having the same struggle....the referenced post link is kind of old. Thanks!

We are going to be going with Compass Bank. There are many around, but also, for us, we find it convenient that they don't charge for using all other ATM's (as our current bank, Wells Fargo, charges $2.50 per occurrence, which does add up).

I got rid of my ATM card (my first and only one) in 1988. Haven't really missed it. I figure I saved a few hundred in fees over the years, and many, many more hundreds in impulse buys .

First off, I use Bank of America and have had only positive experiences with them at my branch (Parmer and 35 location), online and over the phone. That being said, you might also be interested in a credit union. You can search for them on this site. America's Credit Unions: Where people are worth more than money. They have a search function where you enter a zip code to get the names of credit unions nearby. If you don't know your zip code yet, try using 78701 which is the downtown zip code. I know many people have had positive experiences with University Federal Credit Union. Their website is here. https://www.ufcu.org/

I hope this helps a little.

We use Compass Bank as well. One thing you should know, they do not charge you to use another ATM, but the other bank still charges their fee. Now, that being said, you can also get that fee back, by either submitting the actual ATM receipt or actual bank statements (for the most recent 90 days). There is an actual different address in Birmingham to mail those to.

One thing I find frustrating about Compass bank is their online banking website. While in TN, we used USBank and were able to see our "pending" transactions. On Compass' site, all you can see is the transactions which have cleared the bank.

I second the recommendation to look into a credit union. We are keeping the one we had when we lived in California since they have a number of ATMs in the Austin area where we can deposit checks and withdraw for no fees.

Sorry, but after bad experiences with BofA a long, long time ago, I can't advocate them. I had a simple savings account and they managed to lose some of my money because they didn't record a deposit correctly. That being said, I'll take a gander and guess that any bank branch is only as good as its manager and staff.

a neighbor here recommended Wachovia.
I've never experienced customer service like this in my life-even in the small town we're from.
Just walk in to talk about an account-you'll see what I mean.
They remember you, they acknowlege you.
They have been #1 in customer service for several years now-wow.
