Hello -

My wife, son, and I are looking to relocate to Austin. We are going to be visiting there in a few weeks and would like to get some sort of ideas on what to look at in the area that might match what we're looking for...

Our son is starting kindergarten this year so we are curious where the better schools are in the area? Does Austin/Texas allow you to live in school district but enroll your kids in another school district?

We are looking for a nice and quiet area to rent in. What are some good areas to look at for families and kids? We will probably rent first (would like a house). We *really* don't want to live in a busy area or in downtown. In fact, even if we have to drive a few miles to 'get to town' that would be ok for us! We lived in downtown Phoenix and Glendale (Arizona) for a while and don't want a repeat of that!

Thanks for your help! I'm sure I will have more questions...

Where will you be working? The Austin metro is not small so you will probably want to avoid a major commute. As far as living in one ISD and enrolling in another, I don't think that is usually allowed. There has to be some special circumstance to allow this.

Okay, a couple of questions. First, what is your price range for leasing/eventually purchasing? Also, what do you like to do when you're not working/taking care of kids? By that I mean, do you like hiking, bike riding, going to movies, museums, eating out, etc., etc., etc.?

As for crossing district lines, that depends. I've in past had my daughter transferred from one ISD to another within Williamson County that had programs that the one we lived in did not; there was a charge for that, but it was entirely possible. But it would depend entirely on whether the district/school you wanted to transfer to had room, of course, along with some other criteria, depending on the district.
