Hi everyone,

I just moved to Austin from Sweden at the beginning of Dec. as visiting researcher. I'd like to take the driving test in order to get my driving licence. Unfortunately, I don't have any friends here in the city, so I have no one who can let me use their car to take the test. Is anyone on the board willing to meet me at the Headquarters complex in 5805 North Lamar http://maps.yahoo.com/py/ddResults.py?Pyt=Tmap and let me use their car for the test? I'm willing to pay $20 (cash or check) to anyone who can do it.

The office only does tests up until early afternoon, but lines from early. I will get in line early (around 6:45 or so). You could either meet me at 7:30 when they open (or maybe 5 minutes before, just to be safe), or you could tell me your ideal time, and I can put my name in for that time slot.

If you're interested in helping me out as we get settled in Austin, please send me a direct message by clicking on my screen name and choosing "Send a direct message to nimanini." Thanks a lot!

I don't think you can rent a car without a driver's license.

Don't you have to be officially residing in Texas (versus visiting) to obtain a driver's licence? I think your Sweedish license would be accepted if you were pulled over. If you plan to be visiting more than 90 days, you might need a license. Call the DL Bureau and ask them about the requirements.

I think you can rent a car with a foreign license, otherwise places like Orlando would not be able to accommodate the large number of foreign tourists. I'd look into that also.

Good luck,

Steve

Check with your embassy Driving in the U.S. - U.S. Embassy Stockholm, Sweden (http://stockholm.usembassy.gov/consulate/acs11.html - broken link)
and with the Texas DPS Texas Department of Public Safety - Driver License Frequently Asked Questions (http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/driver_licensing_control/faq/answers_dl_id.htm#q51 - broken link) to see how long you can drive on your overseas license.

Or just rent a car with your Swedish license.

I'd ask my employer to help - surely they must have some ability, if not duty, to assist you...?
