Any experiences with Emler or Nitro? How did it go? Anyone who tried both?
My five year old can't swim at all and is a bit fearful of putting her head into the water. Emler is a short drive away and Nitro is a 30-min drive. I am OK with driving the extra distance if I think it is worth it. What do you think? Heard good things about both but if I want her to learn to float (at least) which would you recommend?
We've done nitro but have only looked at Elmer. The facilities at Elmer don't compare to Nitro and in general look like they're geared more towards the smaller kids (which as bad for us but might be fine for the OP). We really like Nitro, they seem to have a good program for getting the kids up and going (using clearly defined stations the kids progress through different skills and they don't move up to the next skill until they've gotten the current skill). This makes for a more concrete progression that the kids seem to like (i.e. lots of little advancements to keep them motivated). We have other friends who go to Nitro and they all like it a lot.
Biggest downside for us is the location, it sucks (for us).

We go to emler on anderson mill rd and like it. Our daughter is 26 months, started last winter, took the summer off (played in neighbors pool during summer) and started again this winter. Total swim lesson time is probably 4-5 months once/week.
They started getting her head in the water right away and now she can "swim" underwater for about 10 seconds, can climb out of the pool and knows to try to get to the edge. She can't float on her own, but is totally comfortable in the water which was the goal. She just moved to the instructor only class, before that I was in the pool with her.
The classes are short (30 minutes) so the actual swim time is a little low now that Im no longer in the water with her. Overall we like it and it is accomplishing what we want which is comfort in the water. She probably will be floating/swimming within the next 2 months.
Personally I think the schools are probably very similar and it is more about the particular instructor. I probably wouldnt bother to drive a long distance.
Nitro is very geared towards proper technique because they want the lessons to feed into their competitive program. My son needed to relearn a bunch of bad habits that the Ymca instruction had taught him. They are awesome and the instructors at Nitro especially at the higher levels are all extremly well qualified. Most were high end college swimmers or coaches. The lesson instructors are a mix of them and basic aquatics instructors but the owner literally knows everyone and is always watching.
We went to Emler and they taught both of our kids to swim well by age 4. Great class. I have also heard great things about Nitro, but mostly about competitive swimming program. I'm sure they're good too. Go with the more convenient option.
For a five year old reluctant swimmer who might be a bit water fearful, I'd start with Emler, if you live anywhere central or if you have a true water phobic, then I'd recommend Nora Martin Swim School in central Austin. Expensive but great atmosphere and she can do amazing things with kids who are afraid of the water.
Quick update- I decided to go with Nitro. It is a longer drive but they are cheaper PLUS you go month to month (and do not have to pay a lump sum). PLUS the ratio is 3:1. I am really happy with them. They take swimming seriously!
