I assume May-September it's hot as all hell, but what about the rest of the year? does it ever get legitimately cold in the winter? is their a-lot of rainfall? how about wind?

Thanks for the input everyone, reading this forum has provided me with lots of info.

Hot as hell doesnt adequately describe it. This past summer felt like satan was trying to microwave your soul until it popped out of your body. It sucked.

Less than 2 months ago we had freeze warnings, to keep our water dripping. That means the nighttime lows were considerably below 32. I think we even saw lows in the teens a few nights. There were many days this winter that reminded me of CT winter - highs in the 30s.

Don't look at weather.com's average temp chart and say "oh the highs in January in Austin are 60" That's a complete misnomer - those are only averages. We spent much of the winter 10-20 degrees below normal.

This past year we had an unusually cold winter and a near record breaking hot summer along with a drought. It hit 100 in mid May and didn't break until September. It was a terrible 12 month run of weather here. Then this winter we had not only had snow, but several freezes getting as low as the teens. We're due a mild summer or at least a really long Spring.

I always find May and June to be pretty pleasant. 80s and 90s with relatively cool mornings in the 60s. It's July and August when you regret stepping out of the house. Hot and humid in the mornings, searing hot and dry in the afternoons.

I'm too hoping we'll get a mild summer to offset the extreme winter.

Last summer was one for the record books. It's not going to be like that all the time. Then we had an usually cold winter follow. You can get a pretty good idea of the "normal" weather by looking at the averages on weather.com.

Yup.

But the rest of the year makes it worthwhile, for me anyway. I love the variety of weather during fall, winter and spring. I'm not fond of the dry years, as I love GREEN, but other than that I always enjoy about 7-8 months of the year and that's about as much as can be expected if you can't afford coastal California or Hawaii.

I must confess that this year I'm dreading the first days when we get a spell of 80 degrees+. Last summer traumatized me. The mere HINT of what's coming in a couple months is enough to make me start planning on moving to northern Vermont where my brother lives.

I think it depends on where you're coming from too.
From the North East...I'm guessing from your post history, sorry I peeked!
I predict it'll be a big change ...not the extent that it gets hot but the duration of the hot spells.

But, you adapt. Go swimming more, wear less clothing...soak your t-shirt in ice water before you go out. Little tips and tricks you pick up along the way.
